4.0 out of 5 stars The Story of a Blues Guitarist Who Started Late, July 5, 2008
This review is from: Plain Man Blues--Daddy Mack Orr's Inspiring Story of Struggle and Triumph (DVD)
Daddy Mack Orr is definitely a late blooming blues guitar player. He was playing the "circuit" with Muddy, Wolf, or B.B. And he only recently recorded his third CD (on the Memphis-based Insides Sounds label). But that's not to say that he's not worth checking out. He just hasn't given up his "day job" yet as an auto mechanic, which is where we meet him at the beginning of this 55-minute documentary directed by Jim O'Donnell.

Orr grew up in Como, Mississippi and the first part of the film has him showing us the empty lots and fields along the highway where things "used to be". WE then follow him into the studio to watch him record his latest CD. There's also a performance at a blues fest in Arkansas. There's enough full performance footage in the film to satisfy most blues fans, however, they will be very frustrated when they see that the film was not "indexed" on the DVD and it's ONE long 55-minute track, making it impossible to go back and watch the performances. (Someone missed the boat here.). There are a few "bonus performances" on the disc as well.

A film like this shows that it's never too late to discover your talent for singing the blues.
