Barbara Cook sings some of the best stuff in this 1950s musical about, believe it or not, the PA Amish. I believe this musical is performed quite often at theaters in PA. Babs is young, and this is before hitting stardom with "The Music Man" & "She Loves Me." In this cd, she sings the feisty "I'll Show Him" and duets the lovely "Follow Your Heart." Another good sing is the haunting male chorus of "Plain We Are," the finale of Act 1. Still, this is a unique musical & I'm not sorry I got it. It's been out of print for years before this cd

Amish wit? You bet! This soundtrack contains a variety of songs in typical late-1950's Broaday musical style. Both music and lyrics entertain and offer a bit of pseudo-Amish wisdom. You will find yourself singing these songs over and over.

This 1955 musical, which played the Mark Hellinger theater for 431 performances, has a bit of an OKLAHOMA!-style culture clash at its heart. A couple from New York find their way to quaint Bird-In-Hand, Pennsylvania to sell an old family farm, observe the ways of the predominant Amish community, and are accused of meddling with same. Today the show is best known for generating a small hit in the song "Young and Foolish" and for offering a young Barbara Cook her first starring role as a potentially rebellious Amish girl. Sound quality of this version of the CD is well-balanced but not state-of-the-art; liner notes do not include lyrics but do feature production notes and an interview with Cook. A likeable musical, but not on most lists of outstanding Fifties offerings.

Glad this is finally back in print as a CD. We had the vinyl album when I was a kid and the songs are indelibly imprinted on my brain. Special favorites are the waltz "This Is All Very New to Me", "You Can't Miss It", and of course the hit "Young and Foolish". Should be performed more by community theaters -- very accessible and tuneful.
