Book Description

Jayne Greer wasn’t the looker or the comedienne in her family; she was the thinker and the writer. And ultimately, she was the survivor. When a deadly house fire claimed the lives of her parents and two sisters just hours after Jayne’s high school graduation, she was left virtually alone in the world. Writing down her personal tale of woe began as a therapeutic exercise in grieving, but the resulting book became her foray into the publishing world… and beyond.

Twelve years after the tragic fire, Jayne finds herself in Boston, thousands of miles from home and completely out of her element. With only her quirky friend, Gus, and ill-tempered editor, Lucas, as company, Jayne’s continual missteps have her ready to scrap her dream and run back to Indianapolis. Lucas demands she do things to her book that she's not willing to do. And even if she were, she's starting to wonder if she'd be able, considering she's in the midst of the worst case of writer's block she's ever experienced. A writer’s retreat to Marblehead is her last hope. But it could wind up costing her the only control she has left in her life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, entertaining book! July 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Yet another well-written book, with well-fleshed characters. She does an excellent job telling the tale of Jayne, an aspiring author, struggling to complete a promised book while dealing with her difficult editor, Lucas, and a series of other woes, including her own insecurities. Jayne's journey is full of wry, witty humor, and the book (like Brown's others) was difficult to put down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great with Tuscan Whole Milk July 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
If any author can perfectly complement a tall glass of Tuscan Whole Milk, Tuscan Whole Milk, 1 Gallon, 128 fl oz, it is Brea Brown. Her latest book, PLAIN JAYNE, shows her unique style and keen insights perfectly. Many authors try to find the right voice (and often fail), but Brea Brown manages to give each character a unique voice, while never veering from the path. While this book might be longer than those that I'm used to, I found myself literally zipping through the pages. For any guys out there who might be wondering whether or not a "chick lit" book can hold the attention of a guy, I can tell you that Brea Brown can. I highly recommend this wonderful read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not at all Plain! June 12, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Brea Brown creates characters with an authenticity that is rare. Each one is finely drawn with lovable quirks, annoying habits, and downright decency! There is a moral fiber and code to her main characters that shines through in a genuine, non-churchy way. This particular plot line hit me hard as I struggle through edits I am certain I cannot accomplish. Jayne gave me the gumption to give it another go! I have read several of Brown's books, and I ain't stoppin' 'til I done read 'em all!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book and author April 28, 2013
By Carla
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read several books by Brea Brown and I haven't found one I dislike yet. The thing that I liked about this one is that the leading man was flawed. So often romances paint this perfect picture of the man and really, are any men even like that? I liked all the characters and I liked how he finally found a way for Jayne to get her muse back.

4.0 out of 5 stars started during a power outage June 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have been patiently waiting for the other Secret Keeper book to come out, then we lost power in a bad storm. When I knew that tree wasn't moving itself and the electric company was saying 4 days, I knew a book would help me pass the time. Thank goodness for battery life on the iPad. I love Brea's style of writing. I found myself feeling sorry for Jayne at the beginning, but Jayne wouldn't let me continue to feel sorry for her.

As I kept reading, when Jayne met her editor, I had some flashbacks to "50 Shades of Gray." I wondered if Lucas was going to take her into a hot and steamy relationship. I like he Brea pulled me in and wouldn't let me stop reading. She has a way of making you really care for the characters

If you've never read any of Brea Brown's books, you should. They read fast, and they leave you wanting more. You are curious as t what will is happening in their lives now. You finish with a good feeling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another incredibly entertaining read from Brea Brown September 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Every time I begin a Brea Brown book, I find myself finishing it in 2-3 days. Brown's characters are always relatable, and Plain Jayne is no exception. I was immediately pulled into the less-than-ideal circumstances of protagonist's Jayne Greer's life as an about-to-be-published author. The only thing that seems to stand in the way of her publishing goal is the very uncooperative and enigmatic editor Lucas Edwards. This is somewhat of a modern adaption of Jane Eyre, one of my all-time favorite books; yet, there are many differences as well to make this a fresh read. I truly enjoyed this and look forward to Brown's next novel, Quiet, Please.

I really enjoyed the book except for the bad language. The story didn't need it and it added nothing. Other than that I enjoyed the characters and the originality of the book.
