The classic Moleskine design and aesthetics have always appealed to me. The lay-flay binding, the integral bookmark, the elastic closure and the pocket in the rear all make Moleskine's extremely useful and versatile. But where Moleskine's have fallen flat in recent years is paper quality, which has been spotty at best; at worst, gel and fountain pen users have found the paper to be terrible, with bleeding and feathering major problems. I'm among the fountain pen crowd, and because of Moleskine's paper issues have had to look elsewhere.
I'm happy to say that this particular Moleskine has no paper quality issues. The paper is an off-white, smooth, 90gsm product that just loves fountain pens. Bleeding is non-existent and show-through is very minimal. I can finally write on both sides of the paper with my wettest pens. The difference in paper quality between this journal and the standard Moleskine sizes is like night and day. If you've had problems with Moleskine paper in the past and don't mind the larger size, you are definitely going to love writing on this paper. It has become my journal of choice.

I sincerely appreciate the quality of Moleskine products. You should know what you are getting if you purchase one. They are light weight and the paper tends to be of good quality, but is mildly see through. If you want to use both sides, I would suggest pencil. I personally write in Pilot G2 .5 pens and they do not bleed through, but can be seen through the paper. I tend to use only one side for this reason, but bought the item for this. I use it as a creative outlet, for drawing and writing, and the A4 size paper, I believe 8x12, allows room for that expression.
Great functionality, again, the only drawback is the paper thickness, but it's part of what makes for the lightweight construction. It's a give and take, just know what to expect when you get yours. Recommended.

Having first come across the A4 "sketch" notebook, I was a bit discouraged as one of the reviews (helpfully) stated that the paper in the sketch was not the same as the"orginial" moleskine notebooks.
However, the "A4 Plain" does have that lovely smooth paper that I (and my pens) have fallen in love with over the years! I even used one as a wedding guestbook/album and it's fantastic.

Jenny Adams,

Not much to say! I really enjoy all of the Moleskine products! My only beef with this one is that I wish the pages were a little thicker, I wasn't surprised by it because it said what the paperweight was, but I still think it could be a little thicker :) I love how nice and big it is, I have more room to draw whatever pops in my head!
I have owned a lot of sketchbooks, but this one really surpasses them with it's quality.

This is a big Moleskine, I'd say a huge one. It's perfect for large drawings, or even for simple sketches. The pages are thick enough, and the ink does not bleed to the other side. Buy one and have no regrets!

For years I have used plain, unlined notebooks for work as my portable brain - everything goes in them from notes to taped-in meeting agendas to whatever - and every single brand I ever tried took the beating and looked it. The spines broke, edges frayed, etc. Not this baby, though. It looks clean and crisp and fantastic; a much better image for a professional to convey. The band holds everything together, the pocket in the back holds business cards and peppermints, the little ribbon helps me keep my place. I've even begun giving them as gifts to staff. Moreover, writing on the paper with a fountain pen is a sensual delight, and saves my creaky old right hand much fatigue. LOVE IT. |
