4.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss the Penn-Dutch series!, September 18, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Just Plain Pickled to Death (Pennsylvania Dutch Mystery) (Paperback)
Beware of reading Tamar Myer's latest offering from the Penn-Dutch mystery series, "Just Plain Pickled to Death," in public places. Passers-bye will eye you with suspicion as you snicker, giggle, chortle, and even guffaw your way through the adventures of Magdalena Yoder as she ensures that nothing, not even a 20-year-old murder, will prevent her from marrying her beloved Pooky Bear, the handsome Aaron Miller. Supported by a cast of irrepressibly loony allies and antagonists, Magdalena is bound to be the funniest (and most determined!) sleuth you've ever had the pleasure to read. Chris Jacobs

5.0 out of 5 stars A deliciosly funny cozy, September 3, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Just Plain Pickled to Death (Pennsylvania Dutch Mystery) (Paperback)
Forty-two year old Magdalena Yoder, the owner of the prosperous Penn-Dutch Inn, is finally marrying the man of her dreams, Aaron Miller. The Mennonite has earned the right to be married in white and is determined that her wedding day will be an event to remember. Magdalena plans a traditional ceremony while serving her guests typical Amish-Mennonite dishes. However, a week before the cherished event is to occur, Magdalena finds the dead body of Aaron's cousin, Sarah Weaver, in a barrel of sauerkraut given to them by the groom's father.

Though the deceased disappeared over two decades ago, Magdalena instantly recognizes her. As Aaron's relatives gather for the unexpected funeral, Magdalena realizes that she cannot complete her wedding vows until Sarah's killer is brought to justice. With many of the groom's relatives having a motive to kill Sarah, Magdalena knows that she must walk carefully if she is to ever go down the aisle and say "I do".

Tamar Myers has written a delightful cozy, filled with enough humor to cause readers to laugh while enjoying every chapter. However, JUST PLAIN PICKLED TO DEATH, also provides an insightful glimpse into the Plain People by authentically contrasting their values and beliefs against the encroaching outside world. This is a special book that is worth reading on two levels, as entertainment and educational.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious Fun!, August 24, 2004

This review is from: Just Plain Pickled to Death (Pennsylvania Dutch Mystery) (Paperback)
Magdalena Yoder, the owner of the Penn-Dutch Inn is finally getting married. Not only is she busy planning her wedding, and dealing with her future husband's relatives who are staying at the Inn, but her future father-in-law gives her a barrel of sauerkraut as a wedding gift, which contains the remains of Aaron (the groom's) cousin who has been missing for 20 years. Magdalena doesn't want anything to spoil her wedding and tries to find the killer before the day of her wedding.

As always, Myers fills the book with quirky characters, many of whom are suspects. Her books are laugh out loud funny, in fact, I'm still laughing over the last two pages!

5.0 out of 5 stars DANGER; DON'T READ IF YOU'RE TRYING TO GO TO SLEEP !, October 9, 2000

Ha...You'll be up all night ! Please try to read Ms. Myers books in order; it will make the family tree much easier to climb. However, think finding your fiance's-cousin's body in a sauerkraut barrell might put a little damper on your wedding? Not in our hero Magdelina's eyes... She's determined a 20 year old murder along with assorted "strange" guests in her PennDutch Inn, are NOT going to cause a minutes delay in her wedding; something she's been waiting for for 40 years! Entire wedding feast receipes were un-real! LAUGHED OUT LOUD ! ! !

4.0 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness. This Book is Hilarious!, September 5, 2003
This review is from: Just Plain Pickled to Death (Pennsylvania Dutch Mystery) (Paperback)
I was so disappointed after the last book, but this book made up for it in spades. It is extremely funny, and the final bit at the end of the book with Magdalena's wedding will make you howl. Even the discovery of the corpse is funny. It turns up in a 20-year old bucket of sauerkraut. Magdalena is less than amused since the sauerkraut was given to her by her soon to be father-in-law as a gift. Now with the discovery of this corpse, will she still be able to get married in a week? You'll have to read to find out what hilarious antics she gets up to this time.

Well, she does it again! This 4th Penn-Dutch mystery in Tamar Myers' series is as fresh as the first. Magdalena's wedding day approaches, but her cousin's fiance' is found murdered inside a crock of sauerkraut. Solving the crime before the wedding prods Magdalena to find the killer of this 20 year old crime. Filled with aunts and uncles come for the wedding, the characters are varied and alive. Magdalena and police chief Melvin's sparring is at top form in this one. Wait till he tries to strip search her! Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars An unusual wedding story, June 22, 2001

This review is from: Just Plain Pickled to Death (Pennsylvania Dutch Mystery) (Paperback)
Magdalena Yoder, 44-year-old proprietess of the PennDutch Inn is about to be married. Her future father-in-law sends her a large barrel of sauerkraut as a wedding gift, but unfortunately it contains the remains of Aaron (the groom's) cousin who has been missing for 20 years! This becomes more than a minor inconvenience when the perpretrator appears to be someone in Aaron's family. Magdalena is racing against time as she attempts to solve the mystery, bury the deceased, and jail the murderer before the wedding date. As usual, she gets too close to the truth and the murderer wants to silence her before she makes his identity known. Myers has a clever sense of humor and this is evidenced in some of the hilarious scenes from this book. Read this one when you're in the mood for a good laugh!

different from the usual mold of women in mystery novels - seems more like a genuine person and is more interesting because of that. Funny, well- written, enjoyable read, pleasant way to spend the evening.
