After closing its debut season on a harrowing note, the crime drama In Plain Sight returns for a sophomore season filled with the same clever scripting and sharp performances built around its unique blend of action and dysfunctional family dynamics. Mary McCormack is again the short-fused, acid-tongued glue that holds the program and its cast of eccentrics together; having recovered physically, if not entirely in an emotional sense, from the kidnapping that ended the show's first season, her Mary Shannon, U.S. Marshal with the Federal Witness Security Program, returns to the double rigors of her job and her contentious family. Neither side gives her much time to breathe in season 2; Mary's cases with loyal partner Marshall (Fred Weller) include a persistent rabbi (Richard Schiff, McCormack's former West Wing costar), a witness (David Denman of The Office) who refuses to testify until his missing son is found, an elderly mobster (Martin Landau) who wants to attend his son's funeral, and a pot salesman who cannot appear in court without copious amounts of his own product. Meanwhile, an FBI agent (Will McCormack, Mary's real-life brother) is hell-bent on bringing down her wayward sister Brandi (Nichole Hiltz) for drug trafficking and murder--Brandi was the original target of the men who kidnapped Mary and killed two federal agents in the first-season closer. Add to the mix Mary's mom (the terrific Lesley Ann Warren), who's struggling with recovery from drinking, plus relationship troubles with boyfriend Raph (Cristián de la Fuente) and new office manager Eleanor (Holly Maples, wife of series creator David Maples), who clashes with Mary at every turn, and the result is another collection of smartly written and frequently exciting episodes that, in many ways, surpasses the best of the first season, even in its closing cliffhanger. Said wrap-out was one of many controversies that swirled around the show in season 2; clashes with the network over the handling of the finale led to Maples and co-executive producer Paul Stupin--the show's guiding forces--leaving the program, which was then re-tooled to focus more on Mary's work and less on her family. It's an unfortunate decision that robs the show of much of its color, so fans should appreciate what they can of that combination here.

DVD extras on the three-disc set include commentary tracks for three episodes; Maples and Stupin are featured on "In My Humboldt Opinion," where they recap in detail their history of working on the show, as well as their appreciation for the cast. McCormack and Weller handle two episodes--"A Frond in Need" and "Who's Bugging Mary"--with a lighter touch that focuses on their performances. Deleted scenes for eight episodes are actually moments that could have fit well into their respective shows, rather than the extraneous material that usually ends up on the editing room floor, while the gag reel combines the usual flubs with some moments of genuine humor. --Paul Gaita

'In Plain Sight', Season 2, is as captivating and fun as Season 1. Mary McCormack continues to be the tough, sarcastic U.S. Marshall, advocating for her clients in Witness Protection. She still has her on and off romance with her hunky Dominican ball player. There's a surprise in this arena for all you fans. She has a bit of post-traumatic stress disorder from the last episode of season one when she was held hostage by drug thieves connected to her screw-up sister, Brandy. Brandy is still a mess but she is at least dating a decent guy she met at A.A. when she went to a meeting pretending to be her mother. Mom is in rehab but I wouldn't place any bets on how long that will last. There is a new office administrator and she and Mary are at each other's throats. The boss and the office administrator are getting on VERY well. Oh, by the way, Mary's house is still torn up and the feds don't seem in a rush to fix it up. From time to time people wonder where Brandy stashed the drugs. If you watched Season 1, you know what happened.

The episodes are as fun and as exciting as always and this is one of the better shows on TV this season. I highly recommend it.

unlike the previous rater who is complaining about the price of the item (if the price bothers you that bad....DON'T BUY IT!), that has nothing to do with the quality of the show. this is a great show! I particularly enjoy seeing a strong female lead who is slowly learning that she has to be vunerable at some point, that she can't be everything to everyone. Watching Mary evolve into a better person and woman is one of the more compelling parts to this show. and the chemistry among the actors is amazing. I can't wait for this to be released to add to my library.

In Plain Sight is the most dramatic show on USA network, and it shines because of it. The depth of character in this show is something that Burn Notice and Psych should really admire. Mary's family gives you the drama that you need and the WITSEC witnesses give you the regular procedural case. Mary is a Marshal for the US government and her duty is to protect witnesses and assign them new identities. She is partnered up with Marshal, yes a Marshall named Marshal. Their jabs at each other are always enjoyable to watch, but at all times you can see there is a deep layer of trust between them. Their boss is Stan and he helps keep the "maverick" Mary in line, or at least he tries. Both Stan and Marshal get center screen once during the season. This was a great move by the writers because these actors were well up to the task and those two episodes were some of the best in the season. I hope they do that again in season 3 to flesh out these characters even more. Eleanor was added this season as a new character in the WITSEC office. Her banter with Mary is quite enjoyable. I hope that they flesh out her character as the show progresses, because I think she has some skeletons in her closet. Mary's mother and sister add some great plotlines to help develop Mary's personal life. I think that her mother Jinx gets to be a little annoying as the season progresses, but her episodes in the beginning of the season make up for her late season antics. Brandi's boyfriend was a nice addition as well as you finally see some redemption in her future. I do have a small complaint this season. Mary's anxiety over killing the drug dealer at the end of last season was tied up way too quickly. I feel like they could have expanded on that more. The season ends in some thrilling and heart wrenching moments, but now that I have seen the Season 3 premiere it looks like they've done it again. They have already tied up the events of this season's finale in one episode. Why must they move on so quickly when a new season starts. These finales are so well written and advance these characters so well, yet they move away from them and their plotlines as quickly as possible. The writing throughout the season is touching and always top notch. These characters change a lot over the season, and never get stale like in most procedural dramas. The video quality is much better than other USA Network releases thankfully and has a sharp picture. The bonus features are decent, but the none of them are earth shattering. If you like great dramas that are a mix of family dysfunction and a classic procedural then I recommend In Plain Sight highly.
