It helps if you are/were a Mormon...,
By Alan Olsen (Portland, OR USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Plan 10 from Outer Space [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie has nothing to do with "Plan 9" by Ed Wood. The movie is a Science Fiction satire of Mormon theology. If you don't know much about Mormon theology and the culture of the Mormon church, the movie is not going to make a whole lot of sense to you. The movie is about how Brigham Young's 26th wife was actually an alien (Played by Karen Black) and how she takes her revenge on the inhabitants of Utah as told by a young woman writer. (As described in the "Plaque of Nehor".) The movie is not perfect by any means, but has its moments of surreal charm. Show this to your ex-Mormon friends. They will get a kick out of it.

Nutty Charm and gentle satire.,
By Friendly Pig "Jack" (Adelaide, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Plan 10 from Outer Space [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Given what seems like obscure subject matter, this original, charming satire, is a triumph of talent over budget. It didn't matter to me that I knew nothing of Mormon doctrine; in the context of both science fiction (and a sometimes musical?!), it wonderfully parodies the absurdities of all religions, with their odd rituals, promises, and particular biases towards men. A young woman begins to question her religous upbringing, and with the onset of sexual awakening, discovers that to even scratch the surface of these tenuous ideologies will not only lay bare her own families oddities, but potentially bring the world crashing down amongst them. Yep the sky may literally fall! Or at least bring about a female apocalypse! And like all the Mormon guys (when they go to Heaven), she just wants to have a planet of her own too, as promised in the book of Mormon! If you got a kick out of such low budget gems as "Screamplay", "Vegas in Space", "Cannibal! The Musical", "Big Meat Eater", and the films of Frank Hennenlotter, (anything where "genre" is treated with gob smacking doses of irreverence!), then "Plan 10 From Outer Space" is sure to delight. I've seen this film a good half dozen times on a rented video, and now eagerly await it's dvd release. Here's to someone like Troma picking it up as distributor. Enjoy!
