Book Description

Once upon a time in America, the world of work was simpler. We were told to go for Plan A: Go to a great college, since your parents probably didn't get the chance. Then go to a professional school--medical, dental, law, you pick it. Then graduate, and get the very best 'professional' job you can. Work your dupa off. Work 60 hours a week. Give 150%, even though you don't own anything. Become an employee! However, you're expendable. And...you're laid off.

Then we could try Plan B: Go through twelve stages of losing job. Declare that you'll chuck it all to start your own business to live the dream. Work your dupa off. Work 120 hours a week. Give 250%, and you own everything. You're an entrepreneur! However, you're dealing with uncertainty, administration, and lack of cash flow. You're dealing with your beautiful dream and the sometimes-ugly reality. And, you're exhausted, frustrated, and...closed.

This book is about Plan C: Don't chuck the day job, keep it. Don't chuck the entrepreneurial dream, keep that too. DO BOTH! Work the full-time day job, and create the entrepreneurial dream on the side. You'll be working ALL THE TIME in your head and pretty much in your life. It won't be easy. But what in life is that IS worth doing??? This book is about how to live a Plan C life, with real interviews, from real-world Plan Cers redefining the American Dream.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"What a comfort to know that the American Dream has become more flexible and Plan C can empower you to design a career plan in which you can thrive. Entrepreneurship will certainly keep the economy moving forward and Plan C professionals have redefined the professional rule book."

--Caroline Dowd-Higgins, Director of Career Professional Development, Indiana University Maurer School of Law and author, The Huffington Post Business Blog

From the Back Cover

"One of the bootstrapping techniques I like folks to consider is keeping your day job while your venture to getting up to speed.  This has become a more common financing strategy now that the weak economy has put a hit on the ability of friends and family to provide start-up financing.  Albert's e-book, Plan C: The Full-Time Employee and Part-Time Entrepreneur, needs to be in every bootstrapping entrepreneur's e-library."

--Dr. Jeff Cornwall,
Jack C. Massey Chair in Entrepreneurship, Belmont University, and author, The Entrepreneurial Mind

"What are you so passionate about that you would be willing to do it for 10 years without ever making a dime? That's what you should do. Plan C gives great examples of how this has been successful for others."

--Tony Hsieh, NY Times bestselling author of DELIVERING HAPPINESS and CEO of Zappos.com, Inc.

"Starting your own business -- or two -- in addition to your day job? Then you're living the Plan C life. In these pages you'll meet other people just like you, who are navigating two more more career paths simultaneously, and loving it. There are answers here you can't get anywhere else."

--Daniel H. Pink, author of DRIVE and A WHOLE NEW MIND

"Bravo to Erin Albert with her latest book that may be tapping into the most vital solution in today's irregular and innovation-demanding environment. When Erin states in the Introduction, "I believe we need to literally redefine the American Dream. One method by which people are learning how to proactively supplement and restore income is through entrepreneurship or part-time entrepreneurship (PTE). Furthermore, an increasing number of professionals are asking themselves: why not both?" she is outlining the mantra of this generation. I have always believed that we are now in the age of the "and" as opposed to the "or." Rather than seeing life as "either-or" people today are seeing life in multiple opportunities....hence the "and." Those who read Erin Albert's book will see how others have accomplished PTE and in so doing find a road map to the newest from of entrepreneurial achievement. Seeing through the eyes of others may be our best vision ever!"

--Dr. Donald F. Kuratko ("Dr. K"), The Jack M. Gill Distinguished Chair of Entrepreneurship; Professor of Entrepreneurship & Executive Director; Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, The Kelley School of Business; Indiana University - Bloomington

"Life is so much better when we have options.  Erin does a great job showing the reader that there are options to be had, as she collects the wisdom of those who are living Plan C."

--Hazel M. Walker, best selling author of BUSINESS NETWORKING AND SEX
