Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Shepherd—the comedian and Emmy Award–winning cohost of The View—is a can-do cheerleader for fighting the Big D (diabetes). With the help of seasoned writer Fitzpatrick, she cites the depressing facts: one-third of Americans are pre-diabetic and 25 million have type 2 diabetes. Then she makes it personal. Her mother died of the disease at just 41. Shepherd got her diagnosis just before landing her gig on The View. Not wanting to die prematurely and leave her son without a mother, she dropped more than 50 pounds. She gives commonsense advice: instead of going on a diet, make healthy eating a way of life. But it’s her honesty and humor that will inspire readers. She confesses that she always relied on faith, funny, and food to make her feel OK. She admits that her primary food groups were potatoes, bread, and pasta, and she shares her tips for various challenges, such as late-night eating (Brushing your teeth can send a signal to your brain—and your tummy—that the kitchen is closed for the night). A fun, easy-to-read pep talk. --Karen Springen --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

I don't think that I've ever read a diet book all the way through before this one. They usually are aggressively marketing a plan that doesn't do a single thing for me and I bought this planning to just skim through it. However, I found this book to be brilliant - an absolute gem. Perhaps it's just the right book at the right time for me, yet I really believe it will resonate with many other readers as well. It's clearly written, well written, well researched and has a nice amount of classic Sherri Shepherd humor - but that in no way detracts from the serious message of the book. I highly recommend it to anyone who is even curious about insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes. I'm so pleased I found it.

I bought this book because I think Sherri Shepherd is hilarious. As a bonus, I learned a lot about a disease that has my name written all over it. (I still fall into the "even if you don't have it" category, and this is the first information that has motivated me to ward off diabetes, rather than assuming that I'll get it eventually.) Ms. Shepherd's advice is practical, and the foods and exercises she touts are basic and fun. (No shameless plugs for foods or gyms or exercise equipment here.) In fact, as much as I love cookbooks, I wasn't even disappointed that the only "recipe" section was basically a weeklong food and exercise diary. The book is mostly a quick read, with some very user-friendly health science thrown in. Ms. Shepherd has made it to my list of people I'd most like to invite to dinner, with a family hike to follow.

i liked the approach and the honesty and truth that came through sherri's testimony about her denials as I related to this so well. It is so difficult to accept the familiar and genetic issues. The book helped me to get in touch with my need to seriously deal with my diabetes.

I admire this book for three reasons. First, Sherri is honest about her weight and health prior to her wake-up call. Second, she worked closely with health professionals to take control of her weight and diabetes. And third, the book contains a realistic, healthy plan that can work for everyone: Read my full review: [...]

I was struggling with accepting my type II diabetes. This book was a great inspiration to me as Sherri seemed to be going thru the same feelings as I am. I would recommend this book for anyone who needs a book that is not just a how to book, but one that hits on your feelings also.

Sherri 's words made me think. I do not have diabetes or pre-diabetes but I am overweight. I have been struggling to lose weight for years. Sherri's words are like a good girlfriend saying "girl, lets make that decision to make a change before it gets serious. I have lost 11 lbs since reading this book. Thank you
