5.0 out of 5 stars great drum, nice sound
We finally bought this for our son after he played with it at friends' houses for over a year. I am not a fan of noisy toys, but this drum makes a couple of different soft tones when hit with the mallet. When you look at the design, you will see the center is more "cut out" than the rest. While this is necessary to allow for different sounds, this center piece of wood needs to be thicker. My 2 yr old Grandson broke that piece after playing with it for about an hour or so. {It was broken by being hit with the drumstick} The toy had to be thrown out. there was no repairing...

My 2 yr old Grandson broke that piece after playing with it for about an hour or so. {It was broken by being hit with the drumstick} The toy had to be thrown out. there was no repairing it as the break was sharp and dangerous.
While it does help the child create many different sound & again, all that is needed is to make that one piece of wood thicker. It is a good toy for musical education otherwise. But the "Otherwise" is a biggie! I'll be writing to the manufacturer about this as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little drum, November 25, 2005
This review is from: Plan Toy Solid Wood Drum (Toy)
We love this drum! It has a nice sound to it and is easy for little hands to grasp. We've had it for almost a year now and no problems with the design, perhaps the other reviewer got a bad one? Highly recommended for your little musician!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Amazing, Invincible Little Drum, February 20, 2010

This is a lovely little drum, as pleasing to the eye as it is to the ear. It's something your kids can bang on all day without giving you a headache, because its sounds are melodic, pretty even. We own a First Act drum that while very authentically drum-like in its sound, makes you want to clap your hands over your ears once the kids really get going on it. Not this drum. The rubber-headed mallet, when struck against the drum produces about three different lovely tones. Its appeal to the kids is equal to that of us noise-weary adults. Which is why I won't hesitate to buy one for our kids when the opportunity arises.

That's right, I don't own it. My best friend does; she bought it for her son this Christmas. I felt compelled to write a review about it because of her story of how incredibly durable this drum is, especially since she almost didn't buy this drum after reading the top-rated negative review on Amazon.

On Christmas morning, packing up to go to the grandparents house, my best friend's husband (whoops) left the drum sitting atop her car. Predictably, when she pulled onto the highway she heard it skitter across the roof, and then a chorus of angry horns blaring as it almost caused a pile-up as cars braked and swerved to avoid it. Sadly the drum not only was dropped at a high rate of speed from the roof of her car, but it was also run over - as the tire track on the underside of the drum attests. There were parts of the drum that looked like a puppy had gotten a hold of them and chewed them to bits. This should have been the end of the story for this little drum, particularly if the aforementioned design flaw was inherent to the toy. However, the drum itself endured this unusual level of abuse beautifully. It did not break, and a little sanding is all it took to return it to right, the tire track being the only real evidence of its big exciting adventure down a four-lane on Christmas Day.

A couple of months later this drum is still entertaining my best friend's son - and his playmates - like it did first thing Christmas morning. It sounds just as lovely, and it's solid as ever.

I don't doubt that there could be an occasional 'dud' or a drum that had an unusually brittle top, but this incident suggests the design is quite hardy. And the drum itself is a lovely little instrument.

I bought this drum for my ten-month-old daughter. The top of the drum is carved out to make, roughly, xylophone keys (not sure how else to describe them) -- little tabs of wood of different lengths that produce different tones. Much like the Plan Toys Xylophone, which we also have, it's made of solid, thick sturdy wood. This is good because I feel pretty safe giving it to her insofar as I don't think she can wreck it at her age. On the down side, this also makes it heavy -- I wouldn't like her to drop it on her toe. Another effect of the thickness of the wood is that the shorter piece don't really sound musical, they sound 'blunt' or 'flat' more like tapping on a wooden table.

Another minor problem is that there are three little rubber feet on the base (I think four would have been better). When the baby leans on the edge of the drum, it tips very easily. As I said, it's heavy and solid, so I stick pretty close to her when she's got it, so she doesn't flip it (or herself). If you want a very solid, nice-looking drum that sounds very mild and quiet, this would be a good choice for you. I was expecting something that sounded a bit more like a musical instrument.

We have had this drum for about a year and it's still a favorite of my two girls, ages 3 and 1 1/2. I like it too because it has a nice sound. The only sound I don't like is the arguing over who gets to play with it!

I ordered this toy for my 9 month old girl based on previous positive reviews and I was pleasantly surprised at how much we both enjoyed it. In just a few days, she learned how to use the mallet to beat on the drum.

Construction of the drum is very solid. It is well made and I like the story behind Plan Toys.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone with a child over 9 months, even though the age suggestion is 19 months.

my 3 yr old has had this drum for 2 yrs now and still loves it when I pull it out! (we rotate toys) It is fun to hit and makes a VERY satisfying sound. It's light tone is beautiful and listening to her play is is wonderful and not ear piercing. It is also VERY durable, so whenever we have a "rough and tumble" friend over for music group, I don't have to worry about damage!

We LOVE this toy!

I purchased this for my nephew for Christmas and he LOVES it! The sound is very nice, not annoying at all. The only draw back is he likes to chew on the stick, but he has figured out how to play the drum without. I'm now the best Aunt ever!
