Product Description

Planar PXL2790MW 27" Quad HD Monitor

The Planar PXL2790MW is a breathtaking 27" IPS Quad HD monitor with a bezel-free display that fuses design and technology. With native 2560 x 1440 resolution, the Planar PX2790MW delivers 77% more resolution than a Full HD monitor.

With 77% more resolution than a Full HD monitor, the cinematic 16:9 Planar PXL2790MW offers enough viewable area to support multiple windows, pop-up multimedia windows, tickers, toolbars and emails while keeping text razor-sharp, allowing for more productivity at work or at home.

The Planar PXL2790MW delivers 2560 x 1440 WQHD high resolution with an IPS panel bonded against the edge-to-edge glass surface, reducing reflection and glare, and providing vivid, life-like image quality at every angle. The Planar PXL2790MW monitor's full lamination of the protective glass reduces glare effects of the polarizer, reduces additional reflections from the extra surface, and gives the monitor additional clarity and crispness.

Mulitple Video Inputs

The Planar PXL2790MW monitor accepts a range of video inputs, including VGA, DVI-Dual Link, HDMI and DisplayPort. The Planar PXL2790MW also has integrated 2W/channel stereo speakers.

QHD Monitor Set Up

The bezel-free monitor is a mere 1.7" thick and, including the base, has a desktop footprint of only 7.9". If an alternate display stand is desired, the base is easily removed and mounted to any Planar monitor stand or other 100mm VESA compatible stand.

I bought this display because of the rave review on TomsHardware web site. They also included their calibration settings which I used to set my monitor. The clarity is stunning.
You cannot use HDMI to run this monitor at its full resolution, so you will need a DVI or DisplayPort jack on your computer. Both cables are included.
My only complaint is that the built in speakers produce very poor audio.

I bought this monitor instead of purchasing Apple's thunderbolt display. Upon arrival, I was VERY impressed with the picture quality, until I began to notice a high pitched wine coming from the rear of the monitor. After more than a minute, it became unbearable to deal with. I called Planar tech support, who suggested that the monitor I had received was defective, and to return it for a new one.

The new monitor arrived shortly after, and I plugged it in, and alas, the same problem was present. I have tried different video connectors, locations, power supplies etc. I called Planar tech support again, and the agent told me that because of the way the display is designed, this is just a common issue. He told me that for people with sensitive hearing often have this problem and there is no work around or fix.

Alongside of being a web developer, I am also a classical concert pianist, so I though that perhaps I heard what other people didn't. So I showed it to other people. Both my girlfriend, roommate, his girlfriend and some of my other friends all could hear the sound as soon as the monitor was turned on and couldn't stand it for more than twenty seconds or so. It's a beautiful display, but this error in design is far to fatal for anyone to deal with, unless you want to wear noise canceling headphones whenever you have the monitor on. Extremely disappointed with this unit & company, and will not be dealing with them again.

I read about this monitor in a computer equipment review site, called Tom's Hardware. They wrote that the clarity was so high, a new category was needed. This is true. This is stunning, beautiful, and has lots of space. I am using an Apple Mac Mini with it. If you buy it, make sure that your computer or video card has enough pixels and that you have a proper cable. To get max resolution, you need Display connection. I am using the Thunderbolt (which is a mini display port too) with the Display Port connection at the monitor. You will be impressed by this monitor.

Color accuracy, grayscale performance, and crystal clear vibrant images! STUNNING image quality.....blows away my Dell U2713HM which I am returning.

The best looking 1440p display I've ever seen. I'd rate this superior to the Apple Cinema as text is razor sharp due to the layer bonding of the AH-IPS panel to the glass layer. There is no gap which can cause slight distortion, resulting in text not being super sharp. Text is incredibly sharp here on the PXL2790MW. Colors fairly accurate out of the box. Set color mode to USER, brightness lower to 15 to 20 range, contrast at 50, overdrive is best at 60 and gamma is spot on at 2.2 (if set to 2.4) Leave RED at 100, lower GREEN and BLUE TO 99 for optimal color.

3 yr CUSTOMER FIRST 2nd day advance replacement warranty. Once the word gets out what a monster this is I expect pricing to rise.

CONS= its reflective. Not recommended if facing a window, unless curtains are drawn.

GAMING?= Make sure you have a sufficient GPU (videocard) to drive 2560 x 1440 pixels. I wouldn't recommend it for FPS but for RPG's, MMORG's or RTS type pc games it's fine. I use a Radeon 7970 and games for me are fantastic (I play RPG's, MMO or RTS).

At work, I have a 27" Apple Cinema Display. I absolutely love it. I'm a web/UI designer, we use the MacBook Pro exclusively in our office, and it's just a great combination. Because of my job, I'm frequently able to work from home, but my employer declined to purchase another Apple Cinema Display for my home. I couldn't really justify buying the Apple display on my own dime, and I was about to order the Asus PB278Q when I ran across a rather glowing review on a tech site for this Planar display. I did a bit more researching, and decided to order it. As a bonus, it was cheaper than the Asus.

Out of the box, it looks great. As clear as the Apple, and easily brighter. Extreme brightness isn't necessarily a good thing for a properly-calibrated display, but it's nice to have the option. I immediately calibrated the monitor, and then decided I actually liked the way it looked out of the box better. (The truth is, to most people — myself included — a properly calibrated monitor will have too "warm" of a cast. Apple recognizes this, which is why their displays are often a bit on the cool side.) I would say the Planar actually has a slightly better factory calibration than the Apple, but they're not that dissimilar. To anyone requiring absolute color accuracy, you'd definitely want to calibrate either display. For my purpose, designing for the web, where users will be using myriad devices with all manner of display casts, it's less important... so I just go with what's pleasing to the eye.

A few others have mentioned hearing a noise when the monitor's on. I tend to be sensitive to the high-frequency noise that, for instance, tube TVs of yore emitted, but my monitor is silent. No stuck pixels, no egregious backlight bleed or flashlighting... it's looking great.
