4.0 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT game!!!
I don't understand all of the negative reviews. If you are a Planet of the Apes fan, you will see certain things in the game that pay homage to the film and TV series. If you are not an Apes fan, this game is still alot of fun. The game is alot of fun. I think the levels are challenging and detail is awesome. Kudos to GBA for putting this game out.

Just looking at the box, it seemed like this could have been a pretty interesting game. I thought that it would be reminiscent of the Rolling Thunder game from back in the day. For some of the younger gamers, Rolling Thunder was basically a multi-tiered 2-D side scroller where you just blasted your way through the mutant-aliens or whatever they were. Although a simple premise, Rolling Thunder was a fun game. The screen shots on the back and the descriptions made me think of this. That really wasn't the reality. You start off the game with little short knife that you use to sort of creep up on snakes, kneel next to, and then kill. (Do What?) You eventually find other weapons, although they only add a little to the gameplay. You can't even fire one of the guns unless you're standing perfectly still. The character doesn't move about very easily. He has to run up to ledge, stop, grab ledge, slowly pull himself up. He kind of labors to move about. But I mean, in EVERY level the goal is to collect 10 scattered flags, which is a rather uninteresting objective. It's not as though they're hidden. And you can complete the levels without collecting all of them. So the game doesn't really do well as an action game or need any particular strategy to play. To me it was OK as a diversion, but I can't really recommend it. If someone would get started on a Rolling Thunder version for GBA though, they might have something.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boooring, February 26, 2002
This review is from: Planet of the Apes (Video Game)
I am a 37 year old female gamer. My husband bought this game for me for Chistmas. This was an extremely boring game. The levels were pretty much all the same thing. I finished the game within 2 days, and I wasn't playing it every minute. Overall a big waste of money.

The first thing I'd like to say is "Planet of the Apes" isn't the game you'd expect it do be.

Story wise, this isn't based on the Mark Wahlberg movie that came out before this game was released. No, its story will confuse most people who aren't a fan of the movies. The story is loosely based of the 1970 movie, "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" which was the 2nd of the original 5 movies. You take the role of Astronaut, Ben... his last name is never revealed, looking for fellow astronaut, Taylor, who disappeared a few years ago. Just a quick note here, Fans of the original series will know that Taylor was the name of Charlton Hestons character in the original movie. You then land on a strange alien planet with the knowledge that it's now 2000 years into the future. You then embark on a quest to find Taylor and discover the mystery of this strange alien world.

The game play is a direct copy of the 1989 game, "Prince of Persia." A rotoscoped 2d platform action game, however, the characters are all 3d on a 2d background. Throughout the game, you'll be required to maneuver Ben from start point `A' to end point `B' which mainly means travelling from left to right across the game map. The enemies consist of snakes, bears, Apes, and mutants, which generally walk around in circles until you put them out of their misery. Throughout the game, you have to collect flags which are supposed to lead you to Taylor, and collecting all the flags are relevant for getting the games good ending.

However, the game is not without its bad points. The Music has a nice tribal and alien feel to it however it's just a few repetitive bars played over and over again, which means six or seven minutes into the game you'll be without a doubt turning down the volume. The game mechanics of Ben are annoying. To turn around has the game character move a step, which is a pain in the bum if you're on a very small platform. This leads to an 80% chance of Ben falling to his death or much worse.

The other bad thing about this game is the way to achieve a good ending. If you've completed the level requirements, you get a medal at the end during your score review. In order to get a medal, you must kill all the enemies and collect all the flags planted by Taylor all within a time space of UNDER 5 minutes. During the early stages of the game this is quite reasonable, and easy to achieve. Unfortunately, as the game progresses, the levels get longer, and there are more enemies, which makes it next to near impossible to kill everyone and get all the flags in less than 5 minutes. I bought this game when it first came out and I still haven't gotten the good ending yet.

Sadly the bad aspects of this game far outweigh the good. The fun of the game is lost amidst bad game play mechanics repetitive music, and poorly thought out mission requirements. Some people have loved this game despite these glaringly blatant flaws, because they can look past the problems to focus on the fun. This game can be fun, but punishing if you're trying to completely finish it. If you're like me, you'll play through this game with a slight sense of enjoyment only to complete it and never to pick it up again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kid Icarus, June 20, 2009

This review is from: Planet of the Apes (Video Game)
it's like Kid Icarus or "Rygar" for those who remember, just the same engine with a different guy/plot. Not too shabby for a game, it's as fun as they were. Rygar being cooler in the music department. Kid sucking in it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Is this gameboy advance?, December 27, 2001
This review is from: Planet of the Apes (Video Game)
This game is not gameboy advance. It's not even gameboy. Almost everything went wrong here. Bad graphics, unresponsive controls, and terrible music. It doesn't even seem to have much in common with the movie except that they both have monkeys and they where both bad. Don't even think about buying this.
