5.0 out of 5 stars The remake was more than necessary, September 1, 2010
This review is from: Planet of the Apes (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray)
The remake is worth the nearly two hours it lasts. Tim Burton packed the story with all kinds of action and dramatic tragedy at every turn in the plot that is thickening as fast as it is sickening, and that is an understatement. Brilliant job, Tim! When are you doing the sequel? He injected a lot of believable realism and that planet where apes have taken over on humans, does not make humans regress to speechlessness because that is impossible, and absolutely absurd. They have regressed to living in villages that we will never see but they do dress properly, they do behave with some kind of humanity, or human-ness at least. Even those that have been reduced to being slaves or pets keep some kind of dignity in their fate or doom. They can even rebel when the occasion come sup and flee if possible. They even gather to fight a final fight, if final it has to be. The battle for the extermination of humans on one side and for the right to live free and equal on the other side is realistic and strong, powerful with many twists at the end of the film. Twist to reduce the militaristic feeling to one man, sorry ape, that can be isolated and neutralized. The details are in the film and not easy to imagine. The next twist is the arrival of a vanished astroape, or rather monkey due to its size. He comes back just in time and in the nick of time the coming back of the monkey messiah saves the day for everyone. Charmingly romantic but charmingly charming. The best twist is of course the return of the prodigal astronaut on earth, at the foot of Abraham Lincoln. What a surprise there, what a surprise then! Life is really absurd to provide you with such surprises. And the best of it all is that you do not see the zippers in the back of the apes and you don't see the plastic masks on their faces. Is the film in anyway revealing of our twenty-first century? I think it is, revealing of what was to come and we did not know yet at the time in 2001, but we know now and have learned since then. The crazy violence of a few clandestine warmongers, and an expedition into hostile territory to free them by imposing an even worse yoke. And the end and how it can or could come, an end that will not be bloodless and easy for anyone but that will be worked out by the people directly concerned and not by invaders from another planet, even if it is only another part of the same planet. You better learn how to swim because you'll have many streams to cross.
