Excellent fenders,

This review is from: Planet Bike Full ATB Front and Rear Bicycle Fender Set (60mm Wide) (Sports)
These are the most inexpensive fenders Planet Bike makes. And for your money they are completely functional and useful.
I've bought 2 sets. I put one on a Raleigh mountain bike. The second set I put on a black Surly LHT. They match the frame beautifully. In both instances the bikes had 26" tires. (Note: on the LHT I painted the back third of the rear fender white, similar to a European bike, to improve traffic visibility. Painting them is easily accomplished by using polycarbonate spray paint. Any over-spray can be easily removed by rubbing it with a little WD-40. So please be aware that even though these come in black, they can be painted to match any frame color). The nice thing is they are solid, they function excellently in keeping the grit off the bike. They look good and they are tough. Both fenders have single stays... so if you're into the "double stay" look of more expensive fenders these may not suit you. They also are only adjustable at the hub end. Each stay is formed as one continuous piece of wire that wraps around the fender through a hinge. This also is less functional than more expensive fenders that allow you to adjust stay length at either end. For me, this has presented NO issues. I highly recommend these fenders. They appear they'll last for years to come. Put 'em on and forget about 'em. Believe me, I've had other fenders that required constant tinkering. I've NEVER had to readjust these.

These are awesome fenders.
Yes, they are plastic and light. But it is not a big deal. One reviewer said they are flimsy -well duh! They are plastic and lightweight. If you want heavy steel fenders than go get yourself a set of 10lb steel fenders if you want to be able to lean your bike against the wall in such a manner that the fenders push against something solid and all the bike's weight is supported by the fender. But if you want something light and strong that won't rust or dent then plastic is the way to go. The Fender stays are fairly strong and well-designed so that they can telescope to adjust to different tire and wheel sizes. The hardware is pretty well thought out and the fenders snapped onto my 30 year old MTB without so much as going to my junk box for extra fasteners. The M5 x 10mm screws were of pretty decent quality and better than what you get with many cheaper accessories. They have combo 8mm hex/Phillips heads and seem fairly well galvanized. Still, I'm swapping them out for stainless M5 x 10mm Button Socket Cap screws as soon as they arrive from fastener-express -a box of 20 costs just over $5 plus shipping. I bought a lifetime supply for all my bikes while I was combining the shipping. The adjustable rear fender mid-clamp is an engineering work of art and well designed to fit just about any bike as well as allow the fenders to nest in the eco-friendly packaging and be more secure in shipping while fit in a smaller box. Very green and smart! Cons: One thing I would suggest with any fenders is visibility. I put some 3M retro-reflective tape on mine to improve conspicuousness to the clueless cagers out on the road. I don't put much stock in cheesy bike reflectors and battery-powered electronics like blinky-lights can and do fail (although I do still believe in & use both -I want MOAR visibility when I'm on the mean streets after nightfall). My life is worth a few bucks in shiny tape in addition to stock reflectors and head/tail lights -und das blinkenlights. Planet Bike could & should incorporate color-matched retro-reflective tape on their fenders which would do so much more for their customer's safety than the few extra cents it would cost/unit. These should also come with the mud flaps already installed. I guess the spandex mafia doesn't want the "ugly" flaps on their bikes or the added weight & wind resistance -but without the flaps I still got significant front tire splooge & spray on my crankest, chain, and frame near the lower case -as well as on my footsies. The mud flap is a necessary addition. I realize if the fender were longer it would be damaged by curbs and a flexible mud flap is necessary to fill the gap below where any fender wouldn't survive long. I just wish that Planet Bike (or the sellers on Amazon) would sell a version of these fenders with the flaps already installed. Maybe they do now -it's just a good idea. The cons are not enough to drop this review down to 4 stars. For the price the value is just too high for anything less than 5 stars. But anything can use a little bit of improvement.

Required equipment,
This review is from: Planet Bike Full ATB Front and Rear Bicycle Fender Set (60mm Wide) (Sports)
Unless you're one of the few riders that actually goes off the trail with your ATB, you are a fool for not having fenders on your bike. They keep you clean and dry and they preserve your chain/sprocket. Put aside your twisted sense of 'cool' and buy these fenders. You won't be afraid to ride when it's a bit wet out. You'll laugh at the car wash and those mysterious green puddles outside of restaurants in the morning. Bring it on!!! And while you're at it buy some street tires and donate the 'mudders' to your cool friends who like to pedal real hard on pavement.

I have these fenders hanging over my 26 x 1.95 tires on my bike. My bike didn't have holes for two of the screws for the rear fender. The fenders come with cable ties in case your bike is like this, but not enough if you're planning to attach cable ties to both the seat stay area of the rear fender and the seat tube area of the rear fender. The installation was easy (comes with instructions) and requires only a Phillips head screwdriver. It would be nice if these fenders came with extra cable ties for bikes that don't have holes in every spot for fenders. However, even with the cable ties, these fenders work wonders for keeping your back dry in the rain.

I bought this more than a year ago, and it saved me many shirts (and me too so I didn't look like a skunk or had to eat mud). It is very sturdy, hard, and not brittle, certainly not some cheap plastics that you'd think or expect. The part that I'm not so happen is with the hook for fasting the middle portion of the rear fender. That WAS cheap plastic, and I had to use something makeshift once it became worn with vibration and abrasion.
And, I would prefer the fenders come with flexible mud guard/skirts. It didn't, and it was not too hard to add one using pieces cut from plastic soda bottles. You just have to drill a hole to fasten it.

Good Fender - But Missing Bolts and Zip Ties,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Planet Bike Full ATB Front and Rear Bicycle Fender Set (60mm Wide) (Sports)
There may not be enough bolts and plastic zip ties, so you may want to make a trip to a hardware store. The plastic of this fender is very good and rigid. It does not appear cheap. You can adjust the stay length to fit your wheel size. There are five attach points for both fenders. Make sure your bike support all attach points otherwise you may have to use plastic zip ties. I have retyped the exact instruction that came with this product below. In my case, my mountain bike does not support attach point 2) and 3) so I had to use plastic zip ties. If you have power drill and tab and die set, you can drill and thread your own thread hole to support the missing attach point. Here is the instruction. For Models: 7004, 7005, 7006, 7007, 7008 FENDERS INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS GENERAL TIPS: - Snip ends off zip ties for neater look - Toe clips may touch front fender during slow speed turns on some bikes. - Check nuts and bolts periodically 1) Attach Point: Front Fender to Front Brake Bridge Attach fender to fork using nut and 47 mm (1.85") bolt. Place bolt through hole in fork crown, then through hole in built-in tab on top of front fender. Tighten with lock nut while keeping fender centered. 2) Attach Point: Front Fender Stays to Front Fork. Bolt stays to outside of threaded dropout eyelets (lower eyelet if you have two per side) using 14mm (0.55") bolts and washers. Slide adjustable stays to conform fender to cuvature of tire without bubbing. For HARDCORE Models (7006, 7007, 7008): Adjust stainless steel stays using eyelet bolts/nuts. Caution: DO NOT overtighten For BASIC Models (7004, 7005): Adjust stays at dropout eyelets via adjustable slide eyeltes. 3) Attach Point: Back Fender to Back Brake Bridge. Attach to brake bridge using plastic clip (snap on) and 27mm (1.06") bolt and lock nut. If bridge has no hole or there is no bridge, use 2 zip ties going through channels in plastic clip then tighten around each seat stay. PRECAUTION: Adjust overall position of fender before firmly tightening zip ties. 4) Attach Point: Front End of Back Fender to Chain Stay Bridge. Attach front end of fender to chain stay bridge using preinstalled metal clip. If clip doesn't attach securely, bend it out of the way and use a zip tie going through hole in bottom of fender below clip and around the bridge. * If no chainstay bridge is present, use a zip tie to attach metal clip to seat tube. 5) Attach Point: Back Fender Stays to Back Wheel Support. Bolt stays to outside of dropout eyelets using 14mm (0.55") bolts and washers (use lower eyelets if there are 2, use longer bolts (not included) if fender has 2 stays per side). PRECAUTION: Make sure attachment bolt does not interfere with cassett/chain. * To adjust rear fender height, see step #2.

I have a 29 inch Specialized Crosstrails Sport. I ride on street only and have put 500+ miles on bike with the fenders attached. The fenders fit just fine. No problems. I'm very happy with them.
4 stars because I almost never give 5 to anything.

I have never ever rated any products with a 4 star rating. But hey better to be honest than to lie to yourself. This fender set is good, but the installation process made me hot! meaning I was so angry that I blew off steam! First of all the nuts and bolts or whatever you call it, they didn't give enough, so I had to buy extra at Wall mart to complete it. I can't believe it. Disappointed because I had to waste time and gas money to go there, and waste another money to spend on the bolts. I only needed one or two and now I'm stuck with 50 bolts because they don't sell it individually, had to buy the package. Other than that the finished product look great! I'm riding a diamond back outlook mt. bike. If only they included extra bolts in there that will make people's life easier.

I have an older (80's)Peugot Urban Express (26" wheels). The only thing I had to do was shorten the stays using bolt cutters. I was able to mount the fenders underneath my reflectors and did not have to go to the hardware store for anything. The rear fender doesn't match the curve of my rear wheel (No Biggie). I've bumped and banged them quite a bit (in and out of my apartment, elevator, secure doors, ect..) no problems. Light weight, excellent quality, nice price. Wet roads and paths, no problem. A must for a commuter bike.

NOT LONG ENOUGH!,

I bike commute to work very often. Planet bike is a good brand but I found these fenders to be very inadequate. The main problem is that the front bike fender is NOT LONG ENOUGH! I still got mud and road debris all over my clothes and bike. Unfortunately, I did not ride in the rain until I had these on for a while so now I can't return them. I would highly recommend you skip this planet bike product and purchase something else.
Maybe the folks giving this product 5 stars don't care about getting muddy. But this is the reason I got fenders in the first place. Work clothes + Mud = Bad day. |
