5.0 out of 5 stars My first and it's good
My first bike computer; I like how the design gives you a lot of info on one screen. There is rarely a need to hit the button. The piece that attaches to the spoke of your tire is made of metal with a metal screw so it doesn't slip or shoot off like other ones that I have read about. Wow! It's great to have 4 items on the same screen? Controls are real simple - one button! Well constructed - heavy sensor wire.

But, no average speed - aargh. And, it falls asleep at rest stops, and sometimes resets itself when it wakes up. I'm not sure whether this is user error or a defect....

The piece that attaches to the spoke of your tire is made of metal with a metal screw so it doesn't slip or shoot off like other ones that I have read about. The only possible issue that I have seen is that the screen sometimes has a slightly dark appearance when I first start riding (and I'm not in direct sunlight at all). But it seems to clear up within a few minutes. Overall very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars You like this Bike Computer, August 24, 2010

Shipping was quick. Opened it and waited a day or two for hubby to install it. After following the instructions it would not work correctly. I could get the clock function to work but nothing else.

I remember reading a review post of a guy who had trouble getting his working and returned to his review and he gave a very good and needed tip in order to get the bike computer functioning correctly. Here's his advice:

"Remember to align the Spoke Magnet at the same level of the Wheel Sensor where a glossy mark like (-) at the upper side (not the lower side of the Sensor). Do not get confused. See the picture in the manual."

This advice made all the difference and is very important and is not clear in the instruction manual.
Other than that small frustration once we got it running it's been a fantastic odometer. I LOVE being able to see it's 4 functions at once. It turns itself off if your bike remains idle for too long but saves your information. Just a little movement from your bike and it turns itself back on. Buy this odometer you will not be disappointed. It's very readable and I had no problem seeing it on sunny days or gloomy ones.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bike Speedometer, February 9, 2009
This review is from: Planet Bike Protege 5.0 (Sports)
Size is larger than its predecessor, but it works fine. Was concerned about installation, which can be touchy, but it went well. Has not needed adjusting in several months use. Aggregates until you reset it, so if you want individual ride statistics, you must remember to reset it at the beginning.

We went with model instead of the newer version cause we just wanted ride time, distance and odometer. Works perfectly and we love it/them, bought two.
Very pleased how easy it is/was to set up and use right away.

First, the good:

1. The display is wonderful. Tells you what you want clearly and with great choices.
2. Mounting is the usual pain in the neck, but the instructions are adequate.
3. Same for setting up the display functions.
4. Quality of workmanship seems very fine and it does what you want.

Now the bad:

1. It failed in less than 60 days and it wasn't the battery. Amazon has a 30-day return policy, so no help there. I e-mailed Planet Bike, the mfg., but no answer yet.
2. The round bracket for the display mount on the handlebars is gigantic, as though the handlebars are as big as an exhaust pipe! You have to use rubber, cardboard, duct tape, etc. to build up a thick collar on your handlebars to mount the display head. That ugly mounting collar looks awful and is not very secure.
3. Instead of buttons to push, one slides the whole display forward on the mounting, depressing a button on the bottom, to make display choices. This is a pain in the neck and as clumsy as it sounds. I much prefer a couple of top-mounted buttons

Would I buy another? Maybe. I'll know if Planet Bike supports me with a replacement. If no replacement, then I reject this product and it's mfg.

This is a great product. It was easy to install, fully functional, accurate, and for a great price. I even accidentally dropped it at great velocity onto the ground and it still works fine! It's much better than the cheaper, more popular Schwinn 17-Function Bike Computer, because not only does it just look way better but the sensor actually stays on the bike! This is because this sensor has a rubber bottom and small handles to hold up the plastic tighteners. I purchased the Schwinn before this one and I couldn't get the sensor to stay on for the life of me, let along expect it to stay on when the bumps of the road occurs. If you need a bike computer, this is definitely the one to get.

Just got back on a bike since 1951. Bought this amazing cyclocomputer to keep daily record of travel. It is TERRIFIC!! Took about 30 minutes to get it installed to my satisfaction, however think the instruction book has made an error. States that it needs to be "1-2cm" apart. No way! My first rotation of the front tire started registering everything and the distance is at least 3/8"in apart. Everything very easy to view, goes to sleep after 5 minutes of inactivity but wakes right up on the 1st turn of the front tire. Am just a recretional rider and this one will last me to the "last ride". VERY satisfied w/this purchase. :)

Protege 5.0 is a eat little computer. Took me like 15 minutes to install, I had plenty of cord from the sensor to the unit, and it works just as described. Nice little size but easy to read. So far its been totally weatherproof too.

I recommend this bike computer for anyone interested.
