1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS!
Twice now I have had my seat stolen and have bought this cable to tie down my new seat. Twice it has been cut, clearly with ease, by a local bike thief. If I can give you one warning other than DO NOT ever move to downtown San Jose, it would be do not buy this cable. Its barely protection - its basically invisible.

I installed this on my daughter's bike for use in college. When you install, you attach one end to the frame and wind the other around the seat post before attaching to the seat so that there is not enough slack to pull the seat completely out of the post. You have to dissassemble the seat to attach the cable, then reassemble. By the way, buy a regular nut to replace the quick-release for the seat. Why make it easier for a thief.

Thieves could reverse the assembly process to steal the seat or cut the cable if they are carrying a cable cutter but this hasn't happened. Instead, they go to another bike that doesn't have the cable. My daughter has come back to her bike to find the seat loosened but still there. I assume whoever tried to take the seat didn't notice the cable from the start.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good enough to me, June 21, 2010

This is a nice, low cost additional security item. I am happy with the product because I'm using this to secure my seat. I'm not parking my bike in some "bad areas" so this is good enough for me, but I'm not sure if I will trust a 5mm cord alone to secure my bike wheels.

After looking at a ton of options, I got this and threw a small master lock on it to use for securing my snowboard. It's small enough to be looped twice and put in a big snow pant pocket, yet a lot thicker than those joke wire combo locks which are like carrying around a plastic rock that can be snipped with mini scissors. Inevitably one or two people will ask me where I got "it", and I have to explain the whole short bike seat cable + master lock deal ha.

This works for me.
Use it to wrap through my seat and around my rear bike rack and then to my OnGuard Brute U-Lock. I am able to leave it on with the end pinched down by my rear racks spring clip ( think thats what its called.)
This saves me time when I am locking it up at the bike rack when I ride down to the subway.

This is NOT my primary lock, this is only used for my seat and rear bike rack. I use a OnGuard Brute U Lock and a OnGuard 4 foot steel cable. This cable is thick ( not sure how thick but if I was to guess I'd say 12-15mm) I use that to lock the front wheel, and the U-Lock is hooked up with both cables and locked up using the Sheldon Brown method of U-Lock usage, which is through the rear tire between the triangle of frame.

I so far would recommend this for what I am using it for.

5.0 out of 5 stars works as expected, February 23, 2011

I used this to tether my quick release seat to the frame of my bike. for that purpose it's a little long but it's pliable enough that the remaining slack could be coiled under the seat. I wouldn't recommend using anything this small as a supplemental wheel lock, as it wouldn't provide much extra security against a would be criminal (assuming your wheels are worth stealing).

The cable was a lot thinner than I expected from just looking at the picture. I should have pulled out a ruler to see what 5 mm (~1/5 inch) looks like before ordering. In any case, I think it does well enough deterring casual thieves. I use it to tether my front wheel to a u-lock on through the rear wheel -- it's just long enough for that purpose. It was cheap, so I'm not really complaining

4.0 out of 5 stars bike lock, June 3, 2008

A little wimpy for the cord strength, but I think it will do the job for seat security and the price was right.

4.0 out of 5 stars Animal Planet eel Tether, May 18, 2010

I use this to lasso wild chickens in the forest of Borneo. Also to tie up domesticated pigs and tether eels. Most animals won't mind but don't use this for long periods of time because it can cause skin rash, since it is a Cable (5mm x 31 Inches), also don't use this for tethering electric eels.

The electric eel (Electrophorus electricus), is an electric fish, and the only species of the genus Electrophorus. It is capable of generating powerful electric shocks, which it uses for both hunting and self-defense.
