5.0 out of 5 stars This book is like a big bag of dog information hand-crafted potato chips...
Very addictive, and lots of fun. And well-designed and flavorful.

Okay, maybe the imagery doesn't quite work, but the book does. It's got a wonderful index, so you can go right to that burning dog question you've just got to answer, and readable, whimsical design, if you're up for browsing for hours. Particular favorites are the dog jokes, dog sports...

3.0 out of 5 stars Have fun but beware!
Wow! Over 350 pages of dog-lists, covering almost anything related to dogs. Tons of information for a few bucks.
However, this is not a book written by experts, but a scissors and paste production. It's a mixed bag of facts, received opinions and sometimes plain myths (i.e. the history of breeds). Consequently I find it difficult to believe anything at all. Can we...

Particular favorites are the dog jokes, dog sports descriptions, song lyrics ABOUT dogs, and the ferociously comprehensive list of "movies with dogs in them."

But beyond the fun for dog owners, I believe it'll be a great resource for those people who HAVEN'T landed on Planet Dog yet--those who are thinking of getting a dog. The temperament charts and well-written descriptions of dog breeds are terrific. Planet Dog tells the whole truth about what it's like to be a dog owner, stinting neither on the pleasure or the pain. Before you get a dog, buy PLANET DOG. It's the real deal.

I love this book! It includes information on everything you could possibly want to know about dogs, the dog show world, and dogs in history. The book is divided into four parts... Part 1: The Culture of Dogs, Part 2: Top Dogs, Part 3: Breeds and Breeding, Part 4: Tender Loving Care and Training.
This book is a MUST if you're a dog lover!

5.0 out of 5 stars Get Your Daily Dose of Dog, December 2, 2005
This review is from: Planet Dog: A Doglopedia (Paperback)
The other day I invented a term: "curdling." It's the act of cuddling in bed with your dog (cur) on a chilly, rainy late-fall morning. "Planet Dog" is the paperback equivalent of curdling. It captures the essence of dogginess -- warmth, love, playfulness, wonder, surprises -- in readable form. If you can't curdle with one you love, at least with curl up with "Planet Dog," so you can get your daily dose of dog in literary form. The only thing missing is the cold nose. (And the shedding.)

3.0 out of 5 stars Have fun but beware!, October 18, 2007

This review is from: Planet Dog: A Doglopedia (Paperback)
Can we trust, for example, the recommendation of the boxer as a dog especially suited to live in an apartment?
So keep in mind that this book is not a piece of dog-science, but supposed to be fun. If you like trivia as well as dogs you may add this title to your shelf of dog books. I would not recommend it as an introduction to the canine world.

5.0 out of 5 stars OMG! I LOVE IT!!, January 16, 2006
This review is from: Planet Dog: A Doglopedia (Paperback)
I was called by the authors about a year or more ago for permission to use something from my White Shepherd Rescue web site (whiteshepherdrescue.org) that he found to be amusing.

I was very pleasantly surprised to receive a copy of the book recently in the mail, compliments of the authors. I was even more pleasantly surprised that the book was so cute, entertaining, and interesting too! Although I can't take full credit for the "25 Poor Excuses For Giving Up Your Dog", the concept is used on many rescue websites. These are REAL excuses that rescues hear every day - when owners want to DUMP their dog. "Of course you can use it, I said, everyone else does, so why not?"

I love this book and am so glad to have been part of it - out of the blue - from something that was on my rescue website.

Thank you Sandra and Harry Chron for putting this fun-filled book together! I know you'll have the best of luck with it. I'll give it rave reviews to all my rescue friends and even put it on my new website (coastalwgsdrr.org) as a great dog book to buy at Amazon!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice, May 7, 2007
This review is from: Planet Dog: A Doglopedia (Paperback)
I purchased and gave this book for an intelligent dog lover, who has since then enjoyed this book very much. Notably, the book features a variety of interesting information that delightfully ranges in tone (ex: the book is both serious and humorous). Additionally, the inside of the book is reasonably attractive - a lot of information (hundreds of pages), but it is organized and put on full color pages with pictures - so no mundane black and white format.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loaded with useful facts and fun trivia but few photos, January 10, 2007
This review is from: Planet Dog: A Doglopedia (Paperback)
I purchased this book for my 11-year-old son, and we've found that the entire family is enjoying it. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that there are very few actual dog photos, but mostly cartoon drawings of dogs. This would be an excellent tool to help choose the appropriate dog for your lifestyle and family. It is loaded with useful facts and thousands of fun bits of trivia (i.e. most popular dog names, favorite breeds, etc.). Pages are presented in a fun-to-read format which highlights the subject(s) on each page. This format keeps my son entertained and browsing through the book for long periods. If only there were color photos included, this book would be perfect for us.
