Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3?This attractive introductory encyclopedia covers Earth's origins and physical geography, its changes over time, and the life-forms that inhabit the planet. The short entries are easy to understand and very basic. Full-color photographs and illustrations are appropriately placed on the pages, with clearly written captions. Occasionally, a "Did you know?" or "Picture this" box appears on the mostly double-paged spreads. Cross references on each page refer readers to related topics in this book and to other titles in the series (A First Atlas, Animals and Nature, etc.). Unfortunately, unless libraries purchase all of the volumes and keep them together as a set, these see-also references will be confusing and frustrating. Our Planet Earth is similar in scope and content to "The World & Space" volume of Childcraft Encyclopedia (World Book, 1994). An enjoyable browsing book that may be best suited for home libraries.?Peg Glisson, Dewitt Road School, Webster, NY

From Booklist

This is the latest offering in Scholastic's series of First Encyclopedias aimed at students in kindergarten through third grade. Other titles are All About People (1995, 0-590-47525-8), Animals and Nature (1995, 0-590-47524-X), A First Atlas (1995, 0-590-47527-4), and How Things Work (1995, 0-590-47529-0). These volumes feature attractive covers and brightly colored illustrations as well as a visually appealing layout, with information presented in manageable paragraphs and boxed inserts.

In Our Planet Earth, topics are arranged in three sections. "The Earth's Surface" covers 12 physical features, such as continent, island, and ocean. "The Changing Planet" deals with processes, including day and night, erosion, and volcanoes. "Life on Earth" covers nine varieties of life--bird, fish, human, and so on. Each topic is treated in a two-page spread.

A helpful feature is a list of see also references that appear at the start of each entry and refer readers to related topics. The glossary lists 54 terms with easy-to-understand, complete definitions. The detailed index will also help beginning researchers. Intended for lower-elementary grades, this is also suitable for upper-elementary and limited-English-proficient students and should be considered by both school and public libraries.
