Editorial Reviews

" gives the child a chance to look at what there is to see and do, a way to participate in discussions with the folks after looking through the book. A way to get excited and involved...'Mom, I want to see the Empire State Building! Do you know why they built the spire on top of the building?' (answer, picture, and hyper-links in the book)." ~Amazon reviewer

"Laura Schaefer's Planet Explorers books for kids are outstanding. They are the future of guidebooks, and while they were written for kids, I absolutely love them. I hope Schaefer writes books for every city in the world, because she's really onto something..." ~Robin Landry, Amazon Vine Voice

This 2011 e-book is one in a series on places you might take your children. Obviously, this one is about New York City. Although it was designed to peak the child's interest in discovering where to go and what to do, it is an asset for both the adult traveler and the child. Since it is an e-book, it is hard to describe the size, but if you printed it out on 8 x 10 paper, it would be about 66 pages in total--so, it is a decent size.

The book begins with a little history and some dates. New York was inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, when discovered by Giovanni daVerrazzano. Hmmmm-guess that's where the Veranzano Bridge got its name. Manhattan was purchased by Dutch Colonial Governor Peter Minuit for 50 guilders/approximately $1,000. Want to know why NY is called the Big Apple? Read the rest of the review and maybe I'll tell you---he he he.)

Central Park is the most visited city park in America, with 25-35 million folks visiting it every year. Visit a 34-ton meteorite at the Arthur Ross Hall of Meteorites. Stroll through the 46 exhibition halls at the American Museum of Natural History, where scenes for films such as Spider Man 2 were shot. When in Times Square, check out the M & M Store, near where the great ball has dropped almost every year since it began in 1907. Check out Bubba Gump Shrimp Company for a fun time and good food. I love Bubba Gump Shrimp and the M & M Store!)

There is tons of info in this little book. Color photos, websites, and hyperlinks are abundant in case you want more info. Addresses and phone numbers are often provided, as well as eateries local to the attraction.

I really enjoy reading the Planet Explorers city guidebooks. Each book gives a brief history lesson and then discusses lot of fascinating places to visit. One of my friends who lives near New York said that Manhattan was purchased for $20 but I'll have to correct them since this book says it was more like $1,000. Reading this book will make you much more knowledgeable than people who even live in New York. I'd be willing to bet that most people living in New York have not been to all the exciting places you will learn about in this book. Some of the facts are amazing like the fact that Central Park has 9,000 benches and 5 million trees and bushes. On your trip to New York you may enjoy seeing a 34 ton meteorite or visiting unique roof gardens. There are also interactive museums, ice rinks and famous bakeries. You might want to see Siberian Tigers or a cherry blossom festival. And who doesn't want to say that they've been to the world's largest store! This book tells you all the coolest places to shop and also directs you to memorable places to eat. Wherever you go there are plenty of restaurants. All I can say in conclusion is that you will love this guide. I've seen New York City in many movies but didn't realize it had so many fun places to visit.

I've been to NY before but never experienced it the way it's presented in this book. It makes me want to go back and see all the attractions we can visit. I can't believe I never knew of the memorial to John Lennon called Strawberry Fields. That is a MUST see for me.
I love all the info the author provides for all the museums we can visit(including a "what's cool section"), along with great places to eat while you're there.
With what I've gotten to read about all the great things to do in NYC, I think I could spend a month there and never get bored. And I know I'd bring this book along with me to help me along the way and to make sure I don't miss a thing.

I LOVE these books and I also see that they have several more for other highly visited places. If you're planning a vacation, writing a paper or are just interested in some cool places I encourage you to check out the Planet Explorers. I think you're going to love them.

For a book written for kids, Planet Explorers is one of the most innovative guidebooks on the market today. What makes it such a must-have if you're traveling to the Big Apple? It fits on your smart phone, or ipad, or any other device that gets you onto the internet where this little book really shines.

Wanting to go to a particular tourist attraction in New York? Just hit on a chapter heading that sits at the front of the book just as it would in a ordinary paperback, but instead of looking for the page number, one click takes you right to where you want to go. Say you want to go to Ellis Island, you click on the chapter and from there you find lots of facts about the island such as:

"Ellis Island Fun Facts!
* Between 1892 and 1924, about 12 million individuals passed through Ellis Island. About 35-40% of today's Americans have ancestors that were processed here.
* Several famous people passed through Ellis Island, including composer Irving Berlin, novelist Isaac Asimov, movie director Frank Capra, actor Cary Grant and comedian Bob Hope.
* Ellis Island was once called Oyster Island.
* Ellis Island is much bigger today than it used to be. It was made larger by using dirt taken from subway tunnels. * Ellis Island was also known as Island of Tears because 2% of immigrants were denied entrance to the United States there, usually for having a contagious disease or criminal record." --Planet Explorers Guidebook New York City.

Along with great places to eat and what kind of food they're serving, a must when kids are along for the ride.

Going to Coney Island? Don't forget to have a hot dog at Nathan's Famous.
