Review

"Laura Schaefer's Planet Explorers books for kids are outstanding. They are the future of guidebooks, and while they were written for kids, I absolutely love them. I hope Schaefer writes books for every city in the world, because she's really onto something..." ~Robin Landry, Amazon Vine Voice

5.0 out of 5 stars Gonna Fly Now October 24, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The theme from the movie "Rocky" thunders through the brain as you read about the famous sights and places of Philadelphia, particularly the Philadelphia Museum of Art, whose steps were immortalized by the character Rocky Balboa in the now iconic training scene from the movie.

A visit to the City of Brotherly Love is laden with historical sites and museums, from the Liberty Bell, Valley Forge National Park and the Independence Hall to the weird Mütter Museum and the Franklin Institute Science Museum. The Philadelphia Zoo and Sesame Place are cool kid's places, not forgetting the Battleship New Jersey.

Food wise, there's more to Philly than cheesesteak sandwiches, and included here is a list of great places to eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner and in between. Soft pretzels and yellow mustard are also said to have been invented there.

This guide includes a list of historical events and gives details on the fun stuff to be found at each one of the famous attractions. There are lists of places to shop, helpful websites, famous people born in the area (Bill Cosby, Will Smith, Richard Gere), movies featuring Philly, maps and more.

Presented in kid-friendly format in simple language and lots of pictures, this is a useful traveling companion when planning your family Philly getaway.

5.0 out of 5 stars The future of guidebooks October 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
What a novel idea, a guide book that you carry around on your smart phone, with hyperlinks to each chapter/city attraction to make it easy to see exactly where you are in the city, or where you want to be . . . complete with places to eat near each attraction, and fun history facts, complete with a quiz at the end.

While this guidebook says it's for kids, I would buy one for any city I was planning on visiting. Who wants to waste time trying to find the things you want to see, and then end up getting lost, and heaven forbid, have your kids start asking where their next meal is. Forget all that and just get one of these guidebooks. One for you kids, and one for yourself.

Here's a sampling of what's inside one of the inventive new books by Laura Schaefer;DID YOU KNOW?
The country's first public library was founded in Philadelphia in 1731 by Ben Franklin. page 10

FOOD
Betsy Ross House in 1903
1. You can grab a slice of pizza nearby at Old City Pizza on the corner of Arch Street and N. 3rd Street. There is also a Starbucks on that same corner. (Who doesn't need more coffee while hoofing it from place to place in search of our history?)

Find your way to the Please Touch Museum and then have lunch at the Please Taste Cafe' inside the museum for tasty lunch or breakfast treats including pasta, hot dogs, sandwiches, snacks, ice cream and desserts.

I love the line drawing map of the city of Philadelphia so you can know exactly where you are. And the travel trips at the end of the book, where you can easily access them, really make this little book a lifesaver. I'm totally hooked on these travel books and will be buying all of them whether I ever get to the places described or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for kids, Great for adults September 23, 2011

I'm traveling to Philadelphia next month and jumped at the chance to check out Planet Explorers Philadelphia guide. It's super, even for adults. Author Laura Schaefer does a great job highlighting the interesting sites of Philly and includes links for further information. I like how she also includes "did you know?" trivia facts, places to eat, and lots of imagery. I can see this being a great tool for parents and teachers as way of interesting tweens in geography and travel.
