A Pretty Underrated Band from the 1990s, December 30, 2011
To be brutally honest, I'd never heard of this band until I heard two of their songs, "Hard Life" and "Misunderstood," used in the soundtrack to one of the games in my PSX fighting game collection, Vs. by THQ. Shortly afterwards, I'd chanced to stumble upon both their better-known album from 1999, Rock & Roll Nightmare, and [more recently] this debut CD of theirs from 1996, and to be honest, I like their work quite a bit. They've got this rather interesting, high-energy, and reasonably hard-hitting "Elvis Goes Outlaw" (emphasis on the "outlaw") psychobilly sound to their songs that make them fun to listen to, be it at a wild and crazy dance party or simply chilling out and slugging down Sprecher's with the fellas at the local pub. The songs on Planet Kaos! in particular are short, sweet (or not-so-sweet, depending on one's own personal definition of "sweet"), and to the point and RARELY last any longer than three-and-a-half minutes, which is enough to give the listener just that much of an adrenaline boost either before seizing the day or while letting out one's frustrations on the old drum set. Unfortunately, the fact that the twelve songs on this disc only amount to just barely over a full half-hour of psychobilly goodness may leave much to be desired for some people, and the fact that a good couple of the songs (i.e., "Mistunderstood" and "The Fool") don't even last a solid two minutes may only add further to the disappointment. Still, it's a solid thirty minutes that I would strongly recommend for anyone who either has or is starting up an archive of lesser-known artists and bands, specifically from the 1990s.
