I have to say I'm really impressed with this toy. For twenty dollars you'll get an accurate, durable model skull complete with modelling tools, clay and measured tray and rolling pin.

3.0 out of 5 stars A True Crime
My sister and I each purchased one of these heads a couple of Christmases ago and were eager to see how we would be with a combination between art and science. I expected a challenge, a long "project" for the weekend, but what I didn't expect was how little educational value the kit really had to offer.

I have to say I'm really impressed with this toy. For twenty dollars you'll get an accurate, durable model skull complete with modelling tools, clay and measured tray and rolling pin.

This is the best possible way to explore sculpting and understand facial anatomy. A college course in sculpting would likely charge students and arm and a leg to be able to get this experience. If you have anyone who you suspect may be interested in art, modelling, sculpting, or industrial design this could be the best twenty dollar gift you could ever hope to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big CSI Fan, January 13, 2007
This review is from: CSI Facial Reconstruction Kit (Toy)
Our family is addicted to CSI and watch it all the time. My son received this as a gift for Christmas. He asked me to help him with it. It is very fun, and very addicting. Once you start you don't want to stop. And when you finish you want to do it again. Thinking about buying another one. Lots of fun for me and my 9year old son.

I bought this for my 11 year old daughter for Christmas. She thinks forensics is interesting and also enjoys art and this is a perfect combination of the two. It was very easy to do, she did it herself. If you wanted to do it again the modeling clay is very soft and you could do it again. A+ educational toy...

I purchased this as a gift for my 10 yr old daughter who loves the hit show CSI. It took us about 30 mins to complete the head. The instructions were very easy and so was the clean up. It has been sitting out for about 3 weeks now and the clay is still soft, it never dryed up or got hard which is great. We can start all over again and change the features if we want to.

1.0 out of 5 stars Missing pieces, January 15, 2012

Bought this for my 8 year old at Xmas. It took a few weeks and a cold winter day before we actually opened it up to play it, but it looked exciting and like it might give us an hour or two of fun on a boring, cold day. Much to our surprise, as soon as we opened it up and inspected the pieces, we were given 2 left ears. So needless to say the fun pretty much stops right there when you cant even put the pieces in place because one side ofhsi head has an upside down ear. We attempted to "overlook" our bad luck and continue on but it was just too glaring of a facial screw up to overcome. Obviously, the package and ripped open, the receipt is long gone and we aren't going to make a trip back to the store to return it when they probably are out anyway. Very disappointing!! I'm not sure whose job it is to put a "L" ear and a "R" ear in a bag, but clearly the manufacturer needs to make sure something as crucial as this to the enjoyment of their toy and the value we as customers pay for it, gets done correctly. Total waste of time, money and an afternoon.

3.0 out of 5 stars A True Crime, February 20, 2008
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars

My sister and I each purchased one of these heads a couple of Christmases ago and were eager to see how we would be with a combination between art and science. I expected a challenge, a long "project" for the weekend, but what I didn't expect was how little educational value the kit really had to offer.

First, the uniformity of the heads and pins. My sister and I were messing around as we are prone to doing and is required of any persons holding fake human heads in their hands, and in the midst of said fooling, we got the skulls mixed up. You would think that a male and female head wouldn't be very hard to tell apart when they're supposedly one victim or another, but come finishing time, we could only assume that we had gotten each other's kits, because neither of the heads looked like they were supposed to.

Second, the difficulty level and the reward for "pushing through." I'm an avid crafter, so believe me when I say that I'm willing to put in the hours for a worthwhile project. This kit has (on average) taken the better part of an entire weekend, sometimes longer, but the results are often lack-luster. In both attempts I've made with my sister, none of the completed faces have resembled the featured "victim" in the case-file. This in itself is dejecting for a would-be forensics fan, but add to it the guidebook's notion that making hair from the remaining clay is as simple as 1,2,3, and I can almost guarantee you that most children will give up or be greatly disappointed in their project in the end.

My sister and I have complete this kit twice each, and though we've had fun, it's not because of the results. (We've been slightly put-off by seeing the finished project.) If you want to practice your sculpting and spend your weekend doing something other than watching movies, I'd recommend the kit in a heartbeat. But if you're looking for something educational, you would probably be better suited by going to your local craft store and asking about their sculpting products. Otherwise, all you'll be learning is how much money the CSI franchise is willing to gyp the consumer of.

2.0 out of 5 stars The CSI head haunts me., August 22, 2005

Okay, I'll admit that this toy is pretty educational. But those eyes, man! Those EYES! The head will sit in your child's room, and most likely face the door. Every time you walk by it will be staring at you, waiting to make its move, plotting your demise - or at least that's what it feels like.

Maybe if the head didn't have such an accusatory look on its face ("WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME?") it wouldn't scare the bejezus out of me.

My own personal fears aside, what kind of parent gives this toy to their kids? And what kind of sick, morbid child would want to play with a toy like this? "Merry Christmas Timmy! Here's your CSI Facial Reconstruction head. Now you can reconstruct the ruined face of the victim of a violent and gruesome murder!" That's how you start a kid on a path that ends at the top of a clock tower with a sniper rifle.
