I LOVE cool tools!,

Dont you love it when a product:
-does what it claims -does it well -is a good deal? I used my PlanetWaves Pro for the first time last night. The pin puller works smoothly, and the string winder doesnt come unscrewed constantly like every other one I've owned! The componenet that really made my day was the string cutter. The 'blade' aint that sharp, but easily whacks the end of a low E string. Since there is only a little exposed metal, all of which is smooth and rounded, the risk of scratching your guitar is minimal, and the small cutting head makes it easy to trim the string very close to the peg. The Pro String Winder appears to be well built, and I suspect that it will last me quite a while. Even if if conks out in a year (not that I think it will), its a good bargain, and I'll buy another. Great product!

The string winder is larger and more comfortable to hold that any of the 'cheap' winders you buy at music stores. The winder part has smooth motion and the cutter works much better than expected. I thought maybe it would bend the strings rather than cut them. But so far, it snips cleanly through the strings and gets pretty close tot he peg head. If you change strings a lot, I would also recommend to yout he Planet Waves Headstand.

Very easy to use.,

I love the pin puller the most. The bottom of it is very thin so that it slides under the pin very easily. This was something that was not as easy to use on my $2.50 string winder.
The cutter was also fun to use. Snips very easily, but the grip is not that easy to maneuver. Still it is a very effective tool. The string winder was also very good. My hands don't move in a perfect circular motion, and no where near it either, but this seems to help me achieve that fairly well, compared to my $2.50 string winder. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is planning on changing strings.

I am a guitar string changing 'newbie' but these things make it so easy. I just bought these and watched a video on youtube about how to do it (sadly after I let my cousin try and he broke a string) and its so easy. I changed all the strings within about 20 min. This tool does everything you need. Plus its small so I carry it around with my little bag that has picks, a tuner, a metronome, extra strings etc. Good price, I would recommend it.

Just did a full change out of my 1966 RIC 330/12 with one of these and man did it help. For those of you that are not familiar with that particular level of frustration, it is widely accepted to be the biggest pain in the tail-feathers known to guitar-dom.
Again, it is just a good string winder and a good string cutter, but the all-in-1-ness of this device makes it a 5 star lead pipe cinch for gotta have it items in each guitar case I own. Does what it is supposed to do Does it well One hand use is possible Survey says, 5 stars. Run don't walk, pick it up. HK

Good winder...lame cutter.,

The winder works great but the cutter is a little lame because it doesnt have a spring mechanism. You have to pull it apart to cut again. Not a huge deal but it adds a couple seconds to yoir string changing time.

After a few years of using pliers to pull out my string pegs, and to cut the strings, I was frustrated. I had broken too many pegs, and cutting the strings took too much effort. I had to fold, cut, bend back and forth, etc. My father finally gave me permission to buy a string cutter, and I flew to Amazon and started browsing. Immediately, this one caught my eye due to the high number of positive reviews. I purchased it with good hopes...
and was not disappointed. The string cutter is excellent; it takes very little effort and cuts in one snip. The string winder makes it very easy to wind my strings, and I am no longer sitting for minutes just winding the tuners by hand. Finally, my favorite, despite being the simplest feature on the tool, the peg remover. At first, it seems a little iffy to use. But! It's wonderful. You just shove it under the peg, and the peg seems to pop out by itself. I used this tool to replace my old strings, and I was extremely happy with my purchase. Also, my friend saw I had this, borrowed it to replace HIS strings, and fell in love with it. He now owns one too.

Handy Little Gadget...,

It beats doing it the old fashion way and the cutter is sweet, but it could be better.
1. It slips off if you go too fast, but I thought that was the purpose of using a gadget like this. 2. It didn't come with much of any instructions, so I was using it wrong at first. There is a big and a small slot. 3. The cutter is so that I pinched my finger during use. The cutter works great, you just have to be careful. 4. The screw that holds it on keeps coming loose. Sure I can tighten it, but it just means the design could be better. All and all it's one of those must have gadgets, but it does require a little discipline to master. I hope the next version comes with a soft, rubber insert so it doesn't scratch the chrome off my turner pegs. That and maybe they could use a long screw and some Loctite to keep it from coming loose. And well, maybe they could offer it in more colors to make it easier to find. Everything I have seems to be jet black.

Love the dual sized tuner head fit. Easily matches most tuner heads. Smooth winding action. I don't need wire cutters near by when wind new strings any more. Love this tool!

Cutter Ok, Pin Puller Weak,
By Riverrunner (North Pole, Ak) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Planet Waves Pro Winder String Winder and Cutter (Electronics)
Overall it's a pretty good tool, but the pin puller built into the handle will only survive one or two re-stringings with tough to pull pins. The plastic handle does not hold up. The winder is ok, and the cutter has been great.
I wish I could find a stronger longer lasting bridge pin puller. I guess needle nose pliers are probably the tool of choice. |
