Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. With characteristic good humor, the authors of Planet Dog, Planet Cat and College in a Can provide a fun and comprehensive guide to marriage, covering the practical, the historical, the cultural and the legal-including, but not limited to, wedding cakes around the world, Charles and Diana's "wedding of the century," the rituals of a Wiccan wedding, and "69 rules of Wedding Crashing." There's also plentiful, practical tips for making the occasion memorable without breaking the bank, from hiring a limo to choosing a DJ to deciding on flowers to designing the wedding program. The happily married Chorons (she's a writer and literary agent, he's a graphic designer) keep things simple with easy-to-follow bullet points and to-do lists that offer useful insight into the big day, and what to expect afterward (the groom's 117-item pre-wedding to-do list includes everything from "start a joint checking account" to "play all the video games you own again" to "see at least one more naked woman"). For all the lists of rules ("14 Rules for Fighting Fair," "Who Pays for What?"), the Chorons also provide the hows of breaking them, making this an incredibly thorough, friendly and encouraging guide. 150 b&w illus.

There is nothing in this book really that you can't find online seriously. HOWEVER, if you are one to print and scribble notes and make lists this book can certainly assist you and save time because many topics you probably need to cover are in here. While it didn't hit the mark with me, it certainly wasn't a complete miss.

I got this book as a bargain book for $1.50 and I simply cannot get over what a steal it is. First of all, this book is dense with info. Trivia, advice, you-name-it, it's got everything to do with weddings. It's a large paperback and not at all flimsy. It had everything from great advice on wedding planning (how to deal with caterers, etc.) to what makes you a bridezilla to where the origins of various wedding traditions come from to dealing with different ceremonies based on religion or ethnicities. It's absolutely great!

I found this book at Barnes & Noble while looking for wedding planning books. It was a nice change, a nice wedding-related diversion from the mountains of wedding planning books that I've been wading through recently. This book is not a wedding planning book, but an encyclopedia (sort-of) of weddings around the world and throughout history. This book is chock full of information, pictures, and factoids. It is arranged in a way that makes it easy to read on a lazy afternoon and to find funny, interesting stories about wedding practices around the world. If you are the type of person that like to read the Guinness Book of World Records, or peruse Wikipedia for hours, (and really, who doesn't?) you will like this book. It gives me a laugh when I am knee deep in wedding preparations, and it also gets me in the mood to work on planning my own wedding.
By the way, while I was in Barnes & Noble, I pulled out my Amazon Price Check app on my android phone and did a scan of the barcode on this book to find out the price on Amazon. And it was $1.97! I guess there was some kind of overstock situation going on? I immediately ordered it on Amazon (why not?), and a brand new copy arrived. You can't beat that price!

This is a really fun, interesting book which would make a great bridal shower gift. It's got everything you can think of about weddings, from necessary stuff like who pays for what and other wedding etiquette to trivia about historic weddings, wedding history, the evolution of wedding cakes....it's so well written and diverse, even men would be interested in reading! Honestly, I'm not much of a wedding person (I got married in my mother-in-law's living room) but I keep flipping through and find something interesting every time. Can't put it down.

Just about everything that you could think of about weddings is in this book. Planet Wedding has more than 350 pages of detailed information that no Bride should be without. As an award winning Wedding Officiant, I can honestly say that this book should be in every Bride and Groom's library. OR. . . it would be a highly valued gift for every Bride and Groom BEFORE the wedding. ;-) Highly Recommended.
