I can't believe I am saying this about a lunchbox but this has been a great investment.

Our 11 year old daughter was super excited to get her PlanetBox, but it ended up being a huge waste of money for us. The main issue arises from the fact that she likes to take salads to school. The Little Dipper itself doesn't leak dressing, but once she puts the dressing on her salad and eats it, there's dressing left behind which leaks out of the salad area and into the other areas. If there's other food left over (she often likes to save part of her lunch for later, or eat some of the food at recess), it gets salad dressing on it and is then "yucky" and inedible. The leftover dressing also can leak out of the box and onto whatever she's using to carry it. Or onto her school stuff if she's carrying it in her backpack (that actually only happened the first time, because we wrapped it in a plastic bag after that, but it was a memorable experience!). I guess she could take a paper towel with her and wipe the lunch box out when she's done eating her salad, but... she could also just take separate containers with lids that seal in a regular cloth lunch bag and avoid the hassle. Which is what she has decided to do ever since about a week after we started trying to use the PlanetBox. Secondarily, she also can't fit a yogurt container into it without squishing it, which is a bummer. We opted to get the box without the carry bag (directly from the company), since her backpack has a compartment the box can fit right into, but that meant packing utensils separately, which was kind of a pain. Overall, it's also just really big. I think she feels a little self-conscious about taking up so much real estate on the lunch table when she's sitting with her friends--especially if she wanted to flip it open and leave the lid open while eating.Read more ›

Verified Purchase
After reading many reviews of the PlanetBox lunchboxes, I decided to bite the (expensive) bullet and purchase two - one for each of my boys, ages 5 and 8. I have not been sorry! Not only is this lunch box perfect for packing a healthy, well-proportioned lunch but the compartments make it easy to be creative too! And, I love that there is no waste! Given the many lunchboxes we've purchased over the years that have warped or leaked or just fallen apart, and considering all the money spent on ziploc bags and containers, it is well-worth the investment. I am also extremely pleased with the fact that it's dishwasher safe, which has saved me lots of time that used to be spent washing out multiple plastic containers.

Also worth mentioning are the conveniences of the carrying case. It has two outside compartments - one for a drink and one large pouch with a velcro enclosure. I have used the velcro pouch to hold the boys afternoon school snacks and the drink pouch is the perfect size for their stainless steel thermos bottles. On the inside of the bag, there is a place to hold utensils and a cooler pack if desired. I have, however, used that compartment for napkins and notes to the boys instead. I find their lunches stay perfectly cool if I put the lunchboxes in the fridge the night before. The stainless steel becomes very chilled and it stays that way until lunch.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with this purchase and both boys are happy to be the talk of the cafeteria with their "super cool" lunch boxes! Even the teachers are impressed. :)

EDITED APRIL 2014: My boys used these lunch boxes every single school day last year and are four weeks of the end of this school year and we continue to LOVE planet box! The stainless steel looks brand new and the carrying cases have held up so well - I was not expecting this given that they are used every single day! 2 years later and I would still (and probably more emphatically) highly recommend!

I would have loved to give this product five stars, but, unfortunately, I can't. When we first got it, I probably would have given it five stars. I love that my son can open up his lunch and see everything. He is more likely to eat his fruits and veggies now than when they were in separate containers. I also love not having to wash and keep up with as many separate containers. The box is sturdy and the dippers hold in salad dressing, hummus, nut butters, etc.
However, after only 3 months of use, the carrying bag is fraying and has also gotten very stinky, even after hand washing with Woolite. This is because I have put salads in the tray, and because my son has forgotten a few times to put the lids back on the dippers before packing up his lunch. It is also difficult to fit some foods in the tray, like tortilla chips, or pre-packages items (which I rarely would use anyway. All of this wouldn't be a big deal, if the until weren't so expensive. I was hoping this would last him several years, but I know we will have to buy a new bag next year, if not sooner.
If you buy this unit, my suggestion is to pack all salads in the big dipper. It can fit alongside a flat ice pack in the mesh net inside the lid. Also, make sure your child knows that it is important to always close up the dippers before packing them up. You should also probably make sure to wash the bag as soon as you see or smell a spill, instead of waiting like I did, until the bag was very stinky.

Update: I contacted the company and they immediately sent me a new soft case. Their soft products have a 1 year warranty, so if it rips again within the year, I can request another one. I upgraded my review from 3 to 4 stars because of the excellent customer service.
