A very important book, November 11, 2009
This review is from: Planetary Types: The Science of Celestial Influence (Paperback)
Mr. Cartledge has done a great job with this book - a long awaited and much needed work on astrology from the viewpoint of the Fourth Way (the esoteric teaching introduced to the modern West by G.I Gurdjieff), and it should also be interesting to scholars, scientists, serious astrologers and people in general, who want to investigate and make sense of the subject of astrology. Mr. Cartledge has picked up several threads at once; from the esoteric Fourth Way tradition, from Michel Gauguelin's modern-day "scientific astrology" research, and he also connects and gives meaning to ancient mystical traditions, showing the unity that connects them; a unity founded in a higher knowledge of cosmic principles which long ago, through initiates became manifested in myth and music, and also entered into religions and spiritual traditions that continue to this day. The connection the author makes between astrology and music is very interesting - there was much I didn't know there. Indeed there was much that was new to me in this book, and I appreciate how the author has kept fantasy to a minimum and really done his best to follow a "scientific standard". It's very thorough work. This book immediately reminds me of John Anthony West's "The case for Astrology", also a great book dealing as objectively as possible with the subject of astrology/planetary influences. But it doesn't present the (Fourth Way/esoteric) body type system like Cartledge does. I know this system (one can still always learn more though), and I think Cartledge shows good examples of the types - something that other authors trying to present this system, in my opinion, didn't succeed that well with. ....Life would be a great deal easier if this body type system, which is in my view far more fundamental than the "ordinary" astrological systems, were commonly known. (Dating services would work far better f.ex. Just a small example.)
Obviously Mr. Cartledge has been in a kind of Fourth Way school or group where he learned about the 6(7) types. Otherwise he couldn't have been able to present this book, I think. The body types are really the one thing missing in the 4W literature; virtually everything else has been recorded in text, but not the types. Other than what is only a "brief mention" in Rodney Collin's "The Theory of Celestial Influence". I know there are 2 or 3 other books about the types out there, but I've browsed through them and was quite disappointed. I have not so far seen anyone present the body types in a book better than what Cartledge has just done with "Planetary Types". I recommend it to everybody; those that already know about the body types, and those that don't know. And for people interested in astrology and mystery in general.
I believe much more can be written about the 6 (or 7) types, for sure, but the basic "explaining of astrology" - that is, how it works, or can work, as well as the historical outline of astrology, and the research into planetary influences and their effects on man - was done excellently in this book. Cartledge really gives us more than we can chew here. (I mean that as something positive.) A very good job. Can I say I understand all of it? No. I will use this as a kind of reference book. And I will over time read chapters of it here and there in order to expand my knowledge/understanding of these many facets of the great cosmic mystery that we all........are part of.

A great book, boldly written. A welcome addition to the few books about planetary types, and the best one so far. I hope it will attract the attention it deserves. RS
