I'd never heard of Mat until a couple of weeks ago when I covered a music festival featuring better known acts. When I made my way to the stage where Mat & his band were performing, I was at first pleasantly surprised and then amazed. What were these guys doing on a #2 stage? I got this and two other albums from him and have been playing all of them a LOT since...but Plank Road Drag keeps winding up on the player the most. It's been a long time since I've been so swept up by all the elements of an artist's music. This guy is superb. My favorite tracks? All are great, but:

Ford Marriage is fantastic, great story, great melody, great playing.

Cannonball will have you sitting back smiling and savoring each note.

Forty Watt Moon is one of the two best tracks, great acoustic guitar & vocals.

Motorbelle is another track that falls somewhere between folk, blues, and rock; and another track that shows off Mat's exceptional song and lyrics writing.

Plank Road Drag ranks right up there with any track from a Springsteen, Mellencamp, or anyone in this general genre.

All the tracks are great, but I think these are the best of a great bunch. Excellent acoustic guitar & mandolin, tremendous vocals, and fantastic song writing make this a true hidden gem everyone should discover.

One of the best acoustic releases I've heard in a long while Great stuff- strong songwriting, fantastic vocals and prime arrangements. An indie/underdog contender for best Americana album of the year hands down. Faves include "Ford Marriage", "Ribbon of Dirt" and "Forty Watt Moon"
