Book Description

November 12, 1996
The Planned Parenthood® Women's Health Encyclopedia is the authoritative reference from America's most trusted name in women's health. This groundbreaking resource offers crucial health information from Planned Parenthood, the largest provider of women's health services in the nation.

Designed to provide women with all the information they need to negotiate the medical system, The Planned Parenthood® Women's Health Encyclopedia provides accessible information on everything from choosing a gynecologist to preventing osteoporosis, from choosing birth control to coping with PMS, from dealing with depression to learning more about the diagnosis and treatment of breast and ovarian cancers. Alphabetically arranged and extensively cross-referenced, this guide covers women's health from medical and holistic perspectives, discussing physical and emotional issues and providing preventative and diagnostic information, treatments, and alternatives.

In order to offer women the knowledge to make the most informed decisions about their own health, The Planned Parenthood ® Women's Health Encyclopedia also includes differing viewpoints on controversial health issues. Throughout the text are evaluation exercises, charts, interactive questionnaires, and survival strategies to help every woman cope with demands, solve problems, make choices, and get the most out of her life. For more information on a specific topic, most sections conclude with a list of organizations throughout the country that offer specialized services related to women's health. AppendiCes include a listing of medical abbreviations, a glossary of medical tests, and a recommended reading list. Line for line, The Planned Parenthood® Women's Health Encyclopedia is the premier publication for helping women feel better, stay healthy, and live longer.

Planned Parenthood affiliates operate nearly 1,000 health centers nationwide. Its national headquarters is located in New York City.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Planned ParenthoodR, a voluntary agency in its 80th year of serving the health needs of over five million American women per year, was assisted in the production of this book by a roster of respected physicians and other health professionals. Arranged in alphabetical order by the name of the condition or disease, entries focus principally on health concerns related to the female reproductive process. There are also brief entries on alternative medical concerns such as homeopathic medicine, herbal medicine, and female genital mutilation. Addresses of resource organizations are found at the end of each chapter, and the bibliography is organized alphabetically by topic. Despite the coverage of nontraditional topics, this book is not as comprehensive as the Harvard Guide to Women's Health (LJ 4/15/96). With the flood of women's health titles on the market (including Random's forthcoming American Medical Association Complete Guide to Women's Health), this is an optional purchase for public libraries. (Index not seen.) [This is the first in a series Crown is undertaking with Planned ParenthoodR. Future titles will include The Planned ParenthoodR Guide to Contraception and the Planned ParenthoodR Guide to Sex.?Ed.]?Cynthia D. Bertelsen, Indexing Svcs., Blacksburg, Va.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every mother owes it to her daughter to buy her this book!!!, February 16, 1998
This review is from: The Planned Parenthood (R) Women's Health Encyclopedia (Paperback)
As a Planned Parenthood Activist, as well as a Health Educator, I find this book to be most helpful in my health education efforts. I feel that every mother owes it to her daughter to buy her this book. It contains the four C's: it is comprehensive, complete, cost-worthy, and CORRECT. Bravo, Planned Parenthood!! Congratulations on a job well done. I plan on buying a copy for every woman I know....it's required reading for every woman!
