From Library Journal
Every library planning to build or renovate should buy a copy of this book. Library consultant Brown has completely reorganized and rewritten her guide from the first edition, originally titled Selecting Library Furniture: A Guide for Librarians, Designers, and Architects (Professional Reading, LJ 10/1/89). She thoroughly covers everything you ever wanted to know about library furnishings and then some. If what the author writes isn't enough for you, you can then follow up by reading other sources listed in the updated and expanded bibliography. Brown's work addresses requirements for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), and American National Standards Institute (ANSI). She also provides information on planning, the process of selecting furniture, and how to determine quality. The author then covers shelving, service desks, chairs, tables, carrels, computer workstations, wiring, children's furnishings, work areas, signage, and bidding. Do you wonder about the terms used for all the pieces in library furniture? Wonder no more. You will find them neatly defined and illustrated and the pros and cons of each type clearly laid out. Besides the appendix, "Goals, Objectives, and the Furniture Selection Process," lists of manufacturers and associations are provided at the end of the book. If you are going to be involved in a building project or renovation, this is required reading regardless of the size of your library.
