Book Description

November 1998
Singapore in the last three decades has experienced a remarkable transformation of its physical and urban environment. It has evolved from a developing country beset with the problems of a rapidly deteriorating urban environment and an acute housing shortage to a newly industrializing economy with a successful public housing program, industrial estates and excellent urban infrastructure. Many urban planners and policy-makers from developing countries have visited Singapore to learn about its urban development experience.

Planning Singapore aims at revisiting Singapore's urban development experience since her independence three decades ago and unpacking the planning and development process behind the successful urban transformation. The book covers the practical issues of plan implementation: the planning approach, policies and strategies of developing the built environment (housing, industry, transportation, infrastructure) as well as the problems and challenges encountered.

Singapore's experience in urban planning can be recognized and shared by developing countries the world over. In documenting the "how" of plan implementation, the book is useful reading for all interested in the construction of the built environment and urban development.
