About the Author

For the past 35 years, Louis E. Boone and David L. Kurtz have pursued distinguished academic careers. Each has taught at a number of major U.S. and foreign universities, and the two have collaborated on writing best-selling books. Their publications have been translated into Chinese, French, Indonesian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, and Spanish. They have lectured extensively throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Kurtz and his wife live in Rogers, Arkansas, where he holds a university professorship at the University of Arkansas in nearby Fayetteville.

During his high-school days, no one in Salisbury, Maryland, would have mistaken Dave Kurtz for a scholar. In fact, he was a mediocre student, so bad that his father steered him toward higher education by finding him a succession of back-breaking summer jobs. Thankfully, most of them have been erased from his memory, but a few linger, including picking peaches, loading watermelons on trucks headed for market, and working as a pipe fitterÂ's helper. Unfortunately, these jobs had zero impact on his academic standing. Worse yet for DaveÂ's ego, he was no better than average as a high-school athlete in football and track. But four years at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia, turned him around. Excellent teachers helped get Dave on a sound academic footing. His grade point average soaredÂ--enough to get him accepted by the graduate business school at the University of Arkansas, where he met Gene Boone. After graduate school, the two became career co-authors, with over 50 books between them. Gene and Dave also got involved in several entrepreneurial ventures. Today, Dave Kurtz is back teaching at the University of Arkansas after duty tours in Ypsilanti, Michigan; Seattle; and Melbourne, Australia. He is the proud grandfather of five Â"perfectÂ" kids and a sportsman with a golfing handicap too high to mention. Dave, his wife, Diane, and four demanding canine companions (Daisy, Lucy, Molly, and Sally) live in Rogers, Arkansas. Dave holds a distinguished professorship at the Sam M. Walton College of Business in nearby Fayetteville, home of the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Professor Douglas Hearth is a member of the finance faculty at the Walton College of Business, University of Arkansas, where he currently serves as director of the personal financial management program. He also served as finance department chair from 1989 to 1996. Prior to that, Dr. Hearth was a faculty member at the University of Colorado. He earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Wisconsin and his Ph.D. at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Hearth is the author of numerous academic and professional articles, and has served as a consultant for government and business. He is also the co-author of Contemporary Investments, published by South-Western.

5.0 out of 5 stars Financial Planning, September 6, 2000

This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to learn basic principles about money management including estate planning and retirement.

PLANNING FOR YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE is well organized, easy to read and understand! The authors explain and illustrate good examples of worksheets for each topic; the book also includes additional blank worksheets in the back of the book.

Other topics include: housing, insurance (car, life, and medical), stock market, transportation, retirement, estate planning, etc.

A disk is included with sample template files to enable the user to prepare numerous worksheets using EXCEL. Examples of templates: budget, income statement, balance sheets, future value of money, loan payments, estate planning.

My students (Ages 17 and up--even older adults)love this book because of its importance to their personal lives and their financial future. They never return this book to the bookstore during "buyback"; they tell me that they will keep it as a great resource. I AGREE!

This review is from: Planning Your Financial Future (with Xtra! Access) (Hardcover)
In any economic environment, but especially in today's turbulent economy, this guide helps with the nuts-and-bolts aspects of financial planning. It really helped me to consider valuable information, from saving to investing. The book provides excellent worksheets, which are very practical and can be applied to many situations. It's written in clear prose, so although it's on a dry topic, the author is clear and concise.
