I bought one of these to hold some 7.62 x 54r ammo. The plano is smaller than I was expecting but that's my fault for not checking measurements. It is significantly smaller than a military ammo can. However, with that said I am perfectly happy with the size and would give 5 stars if not for another issue. The handle has fallen off multiple times even when carefully carrying it. I'm afraid to store ammo in here and might turn it into a first aid kit box instead. The handle is completely unreliable and made of a small plastic lip that catches on the top of the box. The box top flexes significantly when being carried and that makes the handle slip off.

This is a nice, reasonably priced ammo container. It's made of pretty thick, durable polymer, with a very beefy handle, a snug rubber gasket running around the inner edge of the lid, and a tight lid clasp.

It's "lockable," that is, it has a hole in it's front-edge lip to put a small lock through, making this can "legal" for transporting ammo in states where a locked container is required. But you should keep in mind the container is made of polymer, and the lock isn't going to prevent someone from, e.g., walking off with the whole container and/or busting the lock/lid off with a crowbar or pair of big pliers. It will discourage children and nosy friends/guests from getting into the box, but I would consider this more of a convenience container (to keep your ammo dry and carry a small supply out to the range, camping, etc.) than a "security" box.

It's not very big ... about the same storage capacity as your average adult lunchbox. If you buy/store your ammo in factory boxes, how much you can store in this can will depend entirely on the configuration of the boxes. For example, I could only fit 400 rounds of Federal Champion FMJ 9mm (bought in 4, 100-round "value packs") in this particular container, but those boxes left a substantial amount of space around them.

If you buy/store multiple calibers/types of ammo loose, in bulk, you'll be able to put more than that in this can, depending on the size of your cartridges. For example, it would be a great storage/carrying solution for shooters who buy ammo in bulk, and want a container that's a bit smaller, lighter and more easily portable than the big steel containers the ammo came in, for actually going out on their shooting trips. For example, you keep your big, heavy cans locked up at home ...

While others have talked about the quality (which is great BTW), I'll point out the amount of BOXED ammunition that can be stored in each of these little Plano Ammo Cans - per each type of caliber that I'm currently storing:

One Plano Ammo Can (Field Box) can hold:

9mm @ 1,000 rounds in the original boxes!!! (S&B 115 Gr FMJ... 20 Boxes of 50 rds)

-or- 9mm @ 500 rounds of LE in original boxes (Winch.Ranger 147 Gr SXT... 10 boxes of 50 rds)

-or- 223 Rem @ 520 rounds in original boxes (Wolf Prem. Gold 55 Gr FMJ... 26 boxes of 20 rds)

-or- 12 ga @ 100 rounds in original boxes!!!(Royal Buck 2-3/4" 00 Buck. 20 boxes of 5 shells)

I think most people think of these ammo cans for bulk "un-boxed" storage only - but with these Plano cans you can store a lot of ammo in their original boxes - which has always been my preference.

Bottom line... Where else can you find another ammo box for a little over $6 that will hold 100 shells of 12 ga - or - 1,000 rds of 9mm..... ALL in their original boxes???

I have posted a picture in the Customer Images showing how much boxed ammunition each ammo can holds.

This ammo can was exactly what I needed. I buy bulk 40S&W and 9mm pistol ammunition 500 rounds at a time (loose; non-boxed) and I needed a good way to store it. I ordered 2 of these ammo cans to hold these bulk amounts.

I would estimate that you could probably fit about 600-700 rounds of 40S&W in one of these cans and probably around 1000 rounds of 9mm.

These cans are well constructed and have very nice handles. The latch is strong and feels like it will stay that way. The o-ring seal is a very nice touch to keep the ammo dry.

These cans are a great value and a very good value! I highly recommend these to any one in need of an awesome ammo storage device.

While the price is good, the item is not very sturdy and can't hold a full load of say 30/06 ammo, it is too heavy for the handle to stay connected. Watch the weight you put into this and it will work fine, but too much weight and you will have it come apart.

So I ordered some MTM 50 Cal ammo cans from Amazon a couple months back thinking they would be great to store the ammo in my safe. Got them in and they did not fit. My gun safe has a center divider and the entry to the right side of the safe is thinner than the left (due to how the safe door opens). So I figured I would just find some smaller ammo cans at a local shop but the ones I did find were $20+. I saw these posted on a site and immediately ordered the max. I had my friend order 4 more on his prime account. Got them in and they are great. I have them all stuffed to the brim with ammo. They go in the right side of the safe easy and stack up nice. They seem very sturdy even with about 460 rounds of loose 556 ammo in them. You just have to get creative on how to stack the boxes (thanks Tetris...). Only boxes I had difficulty with were bulk ammo packs. I just decided to break them open and dump them in, much easier and you can store a lot more that way. The handles seem sturdy even with the ammo can full. Lids do not seem to bend when lifting full ammo can. The seals seem fine. Cans were packaged well for shipping. I would recommend if you were/are having the same problem that I was.
