Customer Reviews

They weren't Prime, so I didn't return them.

The lid is flimsy and has a plastic snap together hinge, not as strong a top that I was expecting.

Now I fly internationally with these a few times each year.

I was disappointed when this trunk arrived. When I ordered it, I was hoping it was a larger version of a Contico trunk I have that is much sturdier and can airline checked as needed. Unfortunately, it is molded of somewhat flimsy plastic, plus the top attaches with plastic hinges which come off easily. It is a pain to have to reattach the top each time you put something in or take something out. It doesn't seem sturdy enough for airline travel, which was another use I had in mind. Instead, I decided to use it for long term storage. If this is what you're looking for, it is a workable solution.

I own 12 of these. I have owned them for 16 months. I found them at a wholesale for $14.xx/each. Naturally, I bought them out. I used these to ship my possessions internationally. One of the containers held very heavy tools, so heavy that one person could not lift the whole container off the ground. It traveled well in a shipping container to my home overseas. I also flew internationally with several. Now I fly internationally with these a few times each year. They are solid and hold up well to the abuse of airline baggage handlers. The hinge has only been problematic on a few occasions, but they always popped back into the grooves. I have NEVER had the hinges fail during transport, only when opening and allowing the lid to fall backwards toward the ground. None of them have cracked or split open from the weight or abuse. The clasps are solid and will hold even if you pack it until it bulges. Just force the lid down on its proper resting place and snap it closed. I use a TSA lock for all flights and ziptie all the holes to ensure it stays shut. If the zips are cut I can know that the container has been examined by an agent. If you are really concerned it will come open then drill holes near the back where the hinge is and add zipties. This is overkill, but if you must... The $80 price Amazon is charging for the black one is not worth it, find it elsewhere. Even $30 is steep, but I think one would get $30 worth of use from it.

I keep one in the back of the truck now as a go-kit (food, water, jump-pack, first aid, etc.). The roads and living conditions of the foreign country that I live make this necessary. It gets the typical abuse of sliding around in the back, being dropped off the tailgate loaded, or being hauled in the weather on the safari rack.

The new design on the xxl storage box is far improved from the old one. Sporting wheels for easier movement and stronger more durable latches. The one are that was ignored it seems in the design change is the hinge which is still plastic and week and in my opinion the only serious flaw in its design. I recommend this box for storage or shipping, but if a truly rugged container is needed you may want to look elsewere.

I used this Plano box to ship some items in advance of a hunting trip in Alaska. It held an amazing amount of gear including a good sized tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, saw, folding shovel, 7 days of dehydrated food. a water purifier. etc etc, But the best thing was that it was the correct size for my frame type backpack, which it also held. altogether the weight was 58lbs. and I sent it through the USPS, my friend needed 2 action packers to ship his stuff and his frame pack didn't fit and I had the tent. it held up well to the treatment and I would have given it 5 stars but the USPS lost one of the wheels. I guess it popped out. so I contacted Plano customer service and they said that they would send a new wheel out free of charge!!! When I get the new wheel I think I will add a couple small metal straps to hold the wheels in better. I expect to get a lot of good use out of this box.

I bought the identical camo version from Amazon for moving soldier gear around. Here's my review:

If only this thing were larger and sturdier! Or, if only the Rubbermaid Action Packer came with wheels! Woe is me.

I have supplied images above that show the foot locker with the IBA and Kevlar. As you can see, it's not as large as you may be hoping.

I purchased this after reading the reviews and knowing that it is made of flimsy plastic. But I really wanted a trunk with wheels and even though the Action Packer is larger and sturdier, I'm sure it's harder to man-handle.

The XXL is pretty fragile. I have gear inspection tomorrow and bought the XXL to tote my stuff up to the Armory. I am let down at the flimsiness of the locker. The whole thing significantly bows when packing and I am far from stuffing all I could in, and despite that, it was a royal pain to latch it shut. It just bows too much.

PROS:

Wheels. That's about all.
Cost (approx half), but only compared to the Action Packer.

CONS:

Size. Not very large. The description lists the size as: 37.75" long x 18.25" wide x 14" high. That equates to 9645 cu inches. Google tells me that's 41.75 gallons. Thus, smaller than the Action Packer.
Sturdiness. There isn't any. The plastic is thin and flimsy. This thing will not last. Especially lugging it around drills and/or deployments.
Rear hinge. Ridiculously weak. Clever idea in how it easily separates from the trunk, but at the cost of strength.
Handle. You'd think with the wheel set up on the trunk, it may have an expandable handle similar to airport luggage. Nope.
Camo. A generic woodland camo. Doesn't match anything. A small gripe, I know.
Inside shape.
