Product Description

PLANT.T horticultural clay pebbles are made from 100% natural clay. They are clean, pH stable and offer great aeration and drainage in hydroponics, especially in flood and drain, deep water culture and drip feed systems. Due to their unique structure and ability to cover a large surface area, they offer the ideal environment to foster beneficial bacterial growth around the root zone, leading to naturally healthier plants.

I purchased 2 bags of Plant !t clay pebbles (45L + 25L = 70L total) to use in my indoor aquaponics system. I am very disappointed with this brand of clay pebbles because they are very acidic and have been creating huge issues for me when trying to regulate the water pH level.

When I received these they smelled a little like sulfur, but I thought maybe that was just because they are kiln fired so I washed them very well (one handful at a time) before putting them into my grow bed. I ran water through the system and did a few water changes over a 2 week period to clean them more. Our municipal tap water is pH neutral, but after a few weeks of running through the grow bed (no fish, no plants) the pH in my system was below 5.0 (this is as low as my kit can read).

I am fairly sure the clay they used has a high sulfur content and it is slowly building up mineral deposits on the top as water wicks and evaporates. I have been removing the top layer and rinsing it off once per week for over 3 months now, but it keeps coming back. I put 1 gallon of these clay pebbles in 1 gallon of pH neutral water and mixed it around for 20 minutes to dissolve some of the white deposit and see if it was acid or base. I was surprised to see the water went from 7.0 to 5.5 in 20 minutes (acidic). This explains why plant leaves that touch the pebbles will quickly turn brown and die.

I am writing this 4 months after initial system setup. I have had some success in raising the pH by adding 1/2 tbsp of hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide) twice per week and rinsing the acidic build up from the top layers once per week.

I would seriously NOT recommend this product if you will be using it in aquaponics or hydroponics.

Couldn't figure out what was throwing off my ph level for weeks. I rinsed everything before adding water from my other pond (PH ~7.3), but the water would quickly lower to less than 5. Had a pet store test the water along with my own kit. I made separate jars with the pea gravel I was using under the clay, and the clay itself. Turns out the clay was dropping the PH to less than 5. What a huge waste of time and money.

These are more like gravel then pebbles. Very small. Don't buy unless you intend to use coco cups or mat.
