This review is from: Plant Life of Western Australia (Hardcover)
A superb and incredibly useful book. Brilliantly written and profusely illustrated with hundreds of crystal clear habitat and plant community photographs. The Australian State of Western Australia has a flora which is incredibly rich and unique, but much has already been lost due to clearing for wheat farms and overgrazing. One look at the south-west of Western Australia in Google Earth will reveal the gigantic scar that the wheatbelt has created where millions upon millions of hectares of botanically rich flora has been obliterated. Even now the unique wildflower - rich heathlands on the northern outskirts of Perth (in a State where native wildflowers are supposedly protected throughout the entire State) are being destroyed for yet more housing developments (e.g. the Askimo area north of Perth). The most botanically diverse plant communities in that area are being bulldozed, and it seems that no-one is interested in stopping the destruction. Perhaps buyers of this book will get a better understanding of what is being lost in Western Australia.
