Product Description

Flavor:Natural Creamy  |  Size:26.5 Ounce (Pack of 4)

PLANTERS began as a vision in the mind of a young Italian Immigrant named Amedeo Obici.

Little did he know that the small business he began in 1906 would grow into the world's grandest nut company. We have built our reputation and a powerful brand by offering superior quality and product innovation.

American favorite for over 100 years.

PLANTERS has been an American favorite for over 100 years. Whether you love PLANTERS Peanuts for their delicious peanut taste or their satisfying crunch, there’s a variety just for you.

All about the Peanut

Although its name implies it is a nut, peanuts are not true nuts but, instead, a member of a family of legumes related to peas, lentils, chickpeas and other beans. Peanuts start growing as a flower, but, because of their heavy weight after pollination, they bend toward and eventually go underground where the peanut matures. Although peanuts come in many varieties, there are four main types with specific size, taste and nutrient make-up; they include Runners, Virginia, Spanish and Valencia. Runners have become extremely popular because of their high yield. More than half of these peanuts are used for peanut butter. Virginias have the largest kernels and are typically the peanuts you find roasted in the shell or in snack bags. Spanish-type peanuts have smaller kernels and higher oil content than other types of peanuts and are covered with a reddish-brown skin. They are used mostly in peanut candies, some snack nuts and peanut butter. Valencias are a very sweet "nut" with three or more small kernels to a pod and are covered in a bright-red skin. They are usually roasted or boiled and sold in-the-shell.

So many nuts, so little time.

A Healthy Handful of Peanuts
  • Protein helps keep you satisfied. And peanuts—which are not actually nuts but, like peas and beans, are legumes—have seven grams of protein per one–ounce serving.
  • Fiber - Peanuts are a good source of dietary fiber, which can help keep you feeling full longer and can aid digestion. Not too many snacks contain fiber!
  • Niacin is a B vitamin that the body uses to convert food into energy. A one–ounce serving of peanuts delivers about 15% of the niacin you need each day.
  • Vitamin E - A one–ounce serving of peanuts delivers a good source of Vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps you protect cells from damage.
  • Resveratrol - This plant compound with antioxidant properties is found in peanuts (especially high in peanut skins) as well as grapes. Many scientific studies are looking at its health benefits.
  • “Good” Fats - Experts recommend limiting the intake of foods high in saturated fat and replacing them with foods high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated–“good”—fats. And 80% of the fat in peanuts comprise the “good” fats.

After 60-some years, I qualify myself to attest to the nature of peanut butter. I love peanut butter. Smooth or crunchy? ... either is fine. I've made my own peanut butter in the blender. I've sampled peanut butters from Africa, Europe, Australia and Asia. They are all interesting and every country seems to have its national favorite. I picked up a hankering for peanut butter sauced spaghetti in China. The g-kids love it, the wife and kids ... not so much ... it's the concept of peanut butter that I appreciate.

In the US we have the giants of peanut butter ... Jif, Skippy and Peter Pan (JSPP). Some stores carry a designer peanut butter brand at a premium price. In the end, the consistently barely discernible difference among JSPP is marginally irrelevant. Does anyone say `I hate Jif but love Skippy?' No. JSPP at the lowest price delivers the commodity equivalently. I would doubt that a blind taste test could discriminate among JSPP.

In the US market dominated by JSPP, Planters just seems to appear as a butter out of peanut land. I don't think I have ever seen Mr. Peanut on a peanut butter jar before (or, I could just not remember). Was this new? Was it `different? Well, here's what the Planters web site says:

"Peanut butter had some growing up to do. And as the reigning peanut experts, who better to make it happen than Planters? After all, isn't it about time for a more sophisticated peanut butter?"

Taste test result:
1. Planters is smoother. It rolls of the butter knife without tearing a hole in the bread.
2. I taste and smell more concentrated peanut flavor.
3. Planters doesn't tend to clump and hang off the uvula requiring milk to resolve (although milk is certainly my recommended choice for beverage pairing).
4.

I don't do unsweetened, unsalted, peanut butter made from 100% peanuts, but I do like my peanut butter "spread" to be all-natural without high fructose corn syrup or hydrogenated oils. This spread fits the bill, with a better flavor than it's Jif or Skippy counterparts.

Our family had always been a Skippy Peanut Butter (PNB) family, but we decided to give the Planters PNB a chance. We found that we like it a lot more than Skippy. For us, the JIF PNB was too sweet, and Peter Pan was just not acceptable quality.

Since sometimes we have a hard time finding it in the store we had ordered from Amazon. We only purchase the Crunchy so we cannot comment on the Creamy.

I must say I was a bit skeptical and little hesitant to purchase this product after reading other reviews. We are usually a Jiff only family. However, this came up on sale, so I decided to give it a try. FANTASTIC!!! It is not oily and weak as others have stated. The product we received was very rich and flavorful. I actually prefer over Jiff now. The kids raved about it.

Did not notice that this product, which is 'natural' conatins only 90 percent peanuts. That''s because the natural peanut oil that would be present has been augmented by palm oil. Palm oil production plays a huge part in the destruction of the orangutang's environment. Not to mention that it is not good for heart health. [...] Having said that, if these two points don't bother you, The consistency, and flavor of this peanut butter are spot on, I just can't in good conscience continue to use this product

I tend to gravitate towards "natural" or "homestyle" peanut butter, free of sugars and other additives, but I could not pass up the opportunity to try Planters Creamy Peanut Butter. I was shocked to discover a bold, super smooth, fresh roasted peanut taste, more robust and subtle than sweet. I had to exercise some self-control, in an effort to avoid eating an entire jar in one sitting.

INGREDIENTS:

Roasted peanuts, sugar, *hydrogenated vegetable oils (rapeseed, cottonseed, and soybean oils), salt

*One note: the label does not indicate whether the oils are "fully-" or "parially-" hydrogenated, which does make a difference -- "partially-" being the dreaded trans fats.

Overall, a super tasty peanut butter that will compete with any other brand out there. My only deduction is for the added hydrogenated oils and sugar, which, although a nominal amount, is still unnecessary. As I mentioned above, I prefer the unadulterated peanut butters out there. But Planters Creamy will definitely satisfy even the most finicky of eaters, and make the perfect compliment to any jelly.

I love this peanut butter. I decided to try it on a whim. I haven't bought peanut butter in years because I live in Italy and my Italian husband doesn't really like it. Other than the short shelf life (bought in August and expiration in October??!!) it was fine even after it expired (I kept it in the frige). I love that there are no crazy ingredients like molasses and other preservatives. There was a very slight oil residue on top and I did have to stir it in, but only a couple times. This peanut butter is so yummy! I only question the use of palm oil. Isn't it high in saturated fat??
