Walnut Convert,

This review is from: Planters Recipe Ready Walnuts, 16-Ounce Packages (Pack of 6) (Grocery)
In recent years I have substituted pecans for walnuts in all recipes because I found most packages of store bought walnuts had some either bitter tasting nuts or rancid ones. I needed a large quantity of nuts for baking & because the pecans I have ordered in the past were not available I decided to try the Planters walnuts. So far each one I have eaten right out of the bag has been very good - none stale or rancid - and all my baked products were as good as with pecans. A lot of the nuts are halves and the rest in large pieces. I will be ordering these again.

Recent price hike reduces this from a 5 to a 3. Costco now much cheaper.

I thought Planters was a quality company but this product contained a lot of what I call wood still on the walnuts and a lot of stale or old pieces in each of the 6 bags I would not ever buy this product again.

I had tried these after the Diamond walnut shipments were in limbo... It's a matter of preference but I found the batch of walnuts I got to be very bitter and unappetizing. I eat some walnuts every morning with breakfast and having these extra bitter walnuts (with sensitive morning taste buds) were unwelcome.
I think if you're going to bake these into cookies or other confections it should be just fine - but if eating them raw I recommend the Diamond ones.

Product was fresh with many large pieces and met the standards I have come to expect from Planters. If the price remains competitive I will continue to purchase this product from Amazon.com.

Due to some of the older reviews, we were slightly anxious about freshness and quality, but are happy to report that these walnuts are fresh and very tasty. We ordered on December 3, 2011 and the expiration date on the package is January 3, 2013.We purchased these walnuts to use with the Ghirardelli Chocolate Brownie Mix, Double Chocolate(Pack of 12) and are very happy with the results. For anyone concerned with additives or preservatives, the ingredients list does state "BHT is added to the packaging material to help preserve product freshness."

I was a little hesitant to order these because of the last 2 reviews stating that the walnuts were stale. I use them on my cereal each morning and they taste just fine to me. I've used Diamond walnuts and a no-name brand that I've bought from a local store. I can't taste any huge difference among any of them, so I'm going for the lowest price, which is currently these Planters from Amazon.

I like to eat walnuts with my granola, on ice cream, in salads and by the handful. Because of this, I tend to go through them pretty quickly. I typically purchase Diamond Shelled Walnuts, 16-Ounce Bags (Pack of 6) in single bags from my local grocery store. The cost is $8. I buy literally hundreds of things from Amazon for our household needs, and so I decided to see if they sold walnuts. Of course, they do.
The Amazon price on my current brand would save me about the cost of one bag when purchased in a six pack. A nice savings. However these Planters walnuts are currently less than half the price of my current brand at the grocery store here on Amazon. I decided to try them on subscribe and save (which I love). These are yummy. Nice large half walnut pieces in every bag. Expiration dates over a year out. Great tasting fresh walnuts. I am very pleased with these, and will remain on the subscribe and save program as long as the pricing remains this competitive.

I've never been a lover of walnuts, but recently I've moved to a low carbohydrate diet and nuts become an important snack element. I've started eating walnuts and have grown to like them. However, they are *so* expensive and my local big chain grocery store sometimes either doesn't have them or the bags they sell are small (and even more expensive per pound). I'm very happy with these Planters walnuts. They are tasty, not too strong or bitter, almost buttery in their flavor. I haven't had any issues with breakage, though the plastic around each bag can tear easily when you open it, so I've taken to transferring nuts from the open bags to a tupperware-style container. The price is much better than the walnuts at the grocery store.

Much cheaper than what you will find in the grocery store. That is if you are lucky enough to find the 1lbs packs.
