all the other bad reviews here are because the unit does not work or some screwup on delivery.
my unit is working and arrived in a few days, even selecting free shipping. The company also included a car charger for 'free'...
ok, the review. starting with what's good:
- big keys
- just 4 simple keys on the front when it's closed
- turn on quickly
what's bad:
- earpiece is NOT loud. (60dB)
- navigation is clumsy and difficult
- worst built quality i've ever seem in a product that cost more than $5.
- plenty more bad things, let's talk more about them:
- Sound quality
THIS PHONE IS NOT LOUD!!! They advertise this as being loud. and that was the main reason i bought. but it's not loud at all! i compared a sample call with the same SIM card with other GSM phones that also uses 800/1900, so the network is the same. iphone was louder. google nexus one was louder. a 10yr old nokia was louder. the only one that didn't win was the nokia e71. it's the same volume practically.
Calling google voice got me 60dB for the default greeting message, with volume set to 5 of 5 and the decibel meter 1mm from the earpiece.
There's no speaker. I mean, The speaker is pretty loud. So clicking keys and selecting options is annoying to the extreme. it's loud. the sounds are incredibly cheesy. BUT the phone wont let you use that loud speaker for calls! (as a note, the speaker phone is 80dB when switching options, in level 3 of 5)
There's also no audio connector of any kind.
- Lantern
That was a joke. not only the button is extremely hard for me to press (because of the location, there's no grip, also it's right next to the power off button) the light is useless!
I locked myself in the closet and used it. i couldn't see anything. it's just a cheap led. does not even bother your eye if you look directly. My nexus one on the other hand, light up my bedroom, and blind you if you look directly to the light.
- software
The menu is really clumsy. sometimes it shows you the battery/reception bars on the top, sometimes it doesn't. and it's not in a different menu or something. on the same menu, depending on where you are on the scroll, it changes that. really weird and inconsistent.
sometimes you can end calls with the red button. sometimes pressing the red button will show you a menu with 3 options, one of them is end call the others if i recall is for call conference or wait.
Calculator is inside Settings...
- build quality
it will probably NOT survive ONE single fall.
The plastic seems ok. doesn't 'smell' or 'sweat' like some cheap chinese plastic. but is not that good either.
The slider is really weird. can only wonder how it will be some months from now. when it's open there's plenty of play and squishnes. well, when it's closed it's not firm either :)
There's 3 color leds on the bottom, the cheapest kind. inside a clear plastic housing. it's really the cherry on the cake for cheapness. it's a construction that does not belong even on cheap toy, let alone some $150 cell phone. you have to see to understand just how cheap that particular part looks! unbelievable.
The battery does not fit well the case. you need to be violent to close the battery compartment.
The phone came with stickers to make SIM cards fatter because it may not make contact with some thiner ones. But to be fair i was able to use at&t, t-mobile, and other from brazil without a problem.
- ergonomics
This is a product made to be used with both hands. period.
you may be able to use it a little with one hand, but that get ridiculous after some time.
i can't open or close the slider without hands acrobatics using only one hand.
buttons on the top at first seems ok to press, if using both hands.
Then you realize that the lantern one requires a lot of force and the other 3 requires 3sec to be activated. which is OK for power off, but lame for the keyboard lock)
The charger is non standard (you will never find a replacement) and the provided one has a really short cable.
it provides 6VDC 0.67A
- battery
will have to update this one later
- emergency calls
pressing the red button on the back for some time will sound a loud siren and start calling and SMSing up to 5 numbers.
you can only stop it pressing the red drop call button for 3sec.
- final word
This product is not worth $40, let alone $150. sad but true.
Go to ebay, and get any old clamshell from motorola or nokia that have big keys.
even used, they will still be much better quality
