Can a headset be like a Swiss army knife... in other words, can it be a multipurpose audio device? That was my first reaction when I saw this Plantronics GameCom 380 Stereo PC Gaming Headset, so I had to find out. Please do note that these are labeled in the product description as a "PC Gaming Headset" and with no mention of being able to be used with a Mac, but more on this further on.

But first the general likes and dislikes, for those who need to know...

Pros:

+ Excellent sound; rich bass and high, clear trebles
+ Easily accessible volume and mute control on the left ear cup
+ Adjustable microphone is well-designed; good noise cancellation
+ Comfortable, can be worn for hours
+ More lightweight than expected
+ Sound chambers are quite good
+ Long, well-designed sturdy cord
+ Excellent price; a true bargain

Cons:

- No USB connector (but see the note on Mac usage below).

Gaming Applications:

Must admit that I'm not a dedicated game player, but am fortunate to know someone who is, an individual who owns a few different headsets. Adding to that, he had recently bought the Plantronics GameCom 780 Surround Sound Stereo PC Gaming Headset, Dolby surround sound and all, which he rates as a 5-star set. He offered to try my new Plantronics GameCom 380 on a comparative basis, so I agreed. He ran a range of games, including "Star Wars: The Old Republic" and spent some time with them. He then switched headsets with me so I could experience the differences.

Compared to its predecessor, the Plantronics 367 and 377, this Plantronics 380 headset has improved the headset's style, comfort, convenience, and size. The features that stayed the same are: audio quality and microphone quality. However, the 380's design could be improved, though it is stylish.

Features

+ Swiveling earcups
+ Stereo sound. Though it is stereo, it does emulate surround sound. I've tried using it in a 5.1 setting in games, and it emulates it well.
+ On ear volume and microphone control. Awesome! Now you don't need to reach down to the cord to change the volume. Just reach behind the left ear to do so.
+ Cushioned ear cups and headband cushion

Improvements from the 367

+ Convenience. As mentioned, the volume and microphone control are placed on the left side of the headset. It's easy to reach and the controls are well built.
+ Stylish design. Instead of the blocky, heavy look, the 380's design is clean, open, and lightweight
+ A more open feel. The 367's looked really goofy on my head. The 380 is definitely cool and sleek.

Audio

- For gaming, the audio is just about identical to that of the 367's, and it's not such a bad thing. Gaming is definitely more enjoyable with immersive audio and bass.
- For music, there is a good balance, but can feel a bit too airy sometimes. However, with some tinkering, the 380 is great for music. Bass is certainly present, and it's not too overpowering.

Microphone

- I cannot stress how good the microphone is. It's got a good range, though it's nothing close to that of a condenser microphone. Still, the recording is very clear and crisp. I love using this microphone when I am doing voice overs for my videos.

My two gaming sons are loving this headset... once we got it out of its packaging, you know, take a knife to that hard, hard plastic and saw away.

It is super comfortable and the sound is excellent. The velvet insures that the sound from the house is filtered out and the sound from the game is great.

There are two separate plugs- one for the sound, the other for the microphone with easy to reach control for volume and muting. The problem with the two separate plug-ins is that it doesn't work for our Xbox and Wii- only on the computer. It is a sturdy set up but limiting.

The headset packs away neatly by folding the ear pieces around and in toward the headband.

These are great quality and we are really pleased with them.

The box states a few features that are worth mentioning like a noise canceling mic where you can lift it up and out of the way while not in use. The earpods aren't like the normal plastic but a velvet like cloth material that does a good job of being comfortable and canceling out noise around you so you can hear your team or chat without outside noises interfering. The swivel earpods are nice for storing them and if wrapped can easily keep your cord from getting entangled. You can turn on or off the mic by a switch on the earpod. Right under that is a volume button to control the sound. I don't play online games on PC much but when I do I like to keep the mic off until I need to use it so this makes it a little hard for quick on and off function without messing up the game, but if you play with the mic on all the time then this will not be a problem. The cable is sturdy and solid and should hold up. The sound is good especially with the velvet like ear gaurds they really help keep the sound in and the outside sound from interfering with your game. I watched a movie on them also just to see how well they could be used as earphones and I was pleased makes the movie loud and crisp and keeps outside noise out. Will be using these for both movies and when I play online. One last thing I will note because in the past most PC headsets say only PC but will hook up to the PS3 I tried them on Xbox and PS3. I tried to hook them up and as most headsets will configure to the PS3 this one would not so this is strictly a PC headset.
