What's it good for?,
By Mark Philbrick (South Hadley, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Plantronics HS1 Gaming/Multimedia Stereo PC Headset (Personal Computers)
Well, It has the absolute best microphone I ever used. Absolutely perfect for voice chat, telephone calls, and voice recognition. The headsets are, however, uncomfortable to wear because it puts too much pressure on your ears. They don't fit over your ears, they go ON them. The tension system is annoying. As far as sound goes; they seem fine for music, have good bass response, but when I play Quake, the bass is washed out and distorted. But still, the mic is the most important thing here. Even with it's flaws; it is still by far the best headset/mic combo I have ever used. Rat Shack Pro-50MX headset is much better sounding, and has awesome bass, but the mic is absolutely worthless. Now if you could somehow mate the mic from the HS1 to the headphones of the PRO-50MX, THEN you would have THE headset. Sigh...

Great Headset!,

I just bought this headset, and I love it! The sound and bass on it is wonderful and despite what other people say, I think that they're very comfortable. I have a SoundBlaster PCI128 if you're wondering (sounds great though).I listen to MP3's, DVD's, talk to people on Dialpad and Netmeeting, and play games, this has been working very well for all of them for me. Hearing the drum beat in Mp3's are very rich and full, hearing sword swings in Gladiator or hearing gunshots in The Matrix sound so good, so if you watch a lot of movies on your computer, this will make a very nice companion. Voices sound very clear and the nice mic goes well if you use Dialpad or Netmeeting/Roger Wilco/Battlecom/Gamevoice/whatever, and the part I was worried about the most was games, and they sound excellent. Playing Unreal Tournament or Half-Life was like a new experience, I can hear the footsteps and the excellent bass make rockets sound so real it's just amazing. The "automatic tension system" that everybody seems to be complaning is just a piece of rubber plastic across the top, if it does gets annoying, it'd be fairly easy to rip off. The microphone has crystal clear sound and "slides" easily out of the way and out of sight when you don't need it. It is boom, so if you're playing music while recording a wave, on Roger Wilco, Netmeeting, or whatever, people will hear the music, but barely. I was with somebody on Netmeeting and they were saying that they could hear themselfs through it, but I had my volume up quite high, so that's probably the cause. The plastic does feel a bit cheap, but it's very durable (I've dropped it many times and it still works). It's a tad bulky, and isn't as nice looking as the model LS1, but I could care less on how I look with a headset on. The volume control on it is very nice, most headsets don't go loud enough, but these go plenty high. ... I recommend it if you need a alternative to speakers or if you need to replace your old headset!

Great sound for DVDs, MP3s, & dialpad but damn uncomfortable,

The headphones work great except for the fact that it pinches my ears too much. When I wear my glasses, the tight headphones hurt the tip of my ears. it's very comfortable without my glasses but then I would only be able to listen and wouldn't see a thing. I didn't find a problem with this headphones pinching the top of my head (you gotta shift it around til you're used to it). Everyhtng else is excellent. I purchased this headphones as a sort of everything in one: speakers for everyhting and good microphone. It works well but the only problem is after an hour, my ears hurt too much and i have to take them off. so buy this if you don't wear glasses.

This headset is incredible!,

Well, due to the wonderful new world of internet telephone calling, I decided to invest in a headset with mic. After trying many different products and being very unhappy with the quality, I decided to take the plunge and spend a bit more for this product. Needless to say they are far superior to any other headsets I tried. The sound with music is astonishing, and the quality of the internet phone calls are much better than with any other headset. If you're looking to make an investment, this is your product!

Good sound, not comfortable,

Good sound, bad design. They gave me a headache after wearing them for 5 minutes because of the way the headset is designed. Usually you can adjust a headset/headphone so that it is snug on you head without putting any pressure on the top of your head. These, however, have a spring in the headset that grips your head tightly no matter how you try to set it for a more comfortable fit. Some people don't have a problem with this, but I am one of the ones who do. So, if you have several inches of hair on the top of your head to provide a cushion for these things, or an extremely hard head, go ahead and buy this one. If you're like me, tho, look elsewhere.

This was a very bad buy for me. I should have listened to the guy that wrote above me. Good sound but extremely uncomfortable and cheap. Save your money on this one. Believe me.

I have been wearing this headset every day for the past 3 months. Either I am used to the snug fit or I've broken them in but they are comfortable. I have had them on my head for 5 hours and there was slight irritation on my ears just like my previous lighter Labtech LTV-8550 model. I would say my head size is medium since that's the size of my motorcycle helmet. They do look gaudy but that's probably why I purchased them...because they looked like they could handle multiplayer voice gaming w/o my partner hearing all the game noise. Also, I whip them off my head & throw them down @ 5am when I finally call it a night. I'm not too gentle and I wanted something durable. For the price, the new brand/style was worth a shot for me and so far I am pleased with my choice :)

Mic + headset...good for audio-video conferencing and music,

This is the high end of Plantronic's 3 PC headsets. It comes with a boom mic built in, adjustable head set, and two ear muffs of medium size (about 2 1/2" diameter.) It also comes with a ~ 6' long cord, good for reaching the speaker-out jack and the microphone-in jack on the back of your PC. The cord has a mic mute and an earphone volume switch. I use it for both phone calls via the PC and for listening to CDs. The sound quality is pretty good, and from what my friends tell me the outbound sound quality from the mic is very clear as well. They've included a hanger which attaches to your monitor, to keep the headset hanging up and out of the way, which is a nice touch.

This is the best combination of audio and microphone that I have tried. Great for games and speach recognition. Different feeling at first, but later on, much more comfortable than at first. I suggest you get it.

Uncomfortable,
By A Customer
This review is from: Plantronics HS1 Gaming/Multimedia Stereo PC Headset (Personal Computers)
I first bought the LS1 model because the HS1 seemed too bulky and large. My primary interest was to use it for Internet telephony and gaming. The sound quality for music and gaming was disappointing for the LS1 so I got the HS1 to compare.I found the HS1 much more uncomfortable. Admittedly, my head is large. However, the LS1 fit extremely well. So much so, that it was easy to forget it was there. Great for making phone calls. The HS1 felt very bulky in comparison. I didn't like the automatic tension system where you don't adjust the headphones, you just pull it down over your head. I could feel a constant pressure on the top of my head. Also, the unit I had tended to push the right earphones towards the front. When I took it off, I could see it was slightly lopsided. Usually, I am very inclined to buy the higher-priced model, especially in this case since the HS1 has better sound quality. However, I didn't think I could stand having it on my head more than a few minutes. |
