4.0 out of 5 stars The T10 works well--with a little help.
If people love cats or hate them, the T10 headset phone is no different. So many reviews were critical, I hesitated to even try one. But I'm glad I ordered a T10, and it's a keeper. If people love cats or hate them, the T10 headset phone is no different. So many reviews were critical, I hesitated to even try one. But I'm glad I ordered a T10, and it's a keeper. Instead of giving the phone a good workout for several months, I'll review it now so as to report my initial experiences and address the complaints.

The Headset Cord is over 6 ft. long, a plus. It plugs into the Headset Jack on the base. (The Oct 17, 2002, review stating that it's only 3 ft. long is outdated, and is alarmingly misleading.)

My unit does not make humming noises while in use, as some reported experiencing. This was a major concern, prior to purchase. (I have a DSL Internet connection for my computer, so I did need to plug the Line Cord into a DSL adapter, which plugs into the wall phone jack.)

The complaints about the Mute and On/Off buttons on the base being too close together? Yes, they are close. But they're also big, and they're labeled. The Mute button is 1¼ in. wide, and On/Off is 1¾ in. wide. Either button may be selected with ease, unless you're Bigfoot!

About the base's instability when you tap numbers in the top row. That did happen--but only when I placed the phone was way back on the table, and had to reach. I was dialing from a much lower angle than usual.

When the phone is closer, its natural to tap the numbers from a higher angle, and the unit remains adequately stable. That said, I would prefer that the unit's top surface was closer to parallel with its bottom, and not so high-angled. This may also present a lighting problem. If you happen to have a table lamp behind the base, as I do, it makes a shadow on the numbers--which are in their buttons' depressed tops.

I prefer using the headset, which feels light and comfortable. My head is fairly large, but the very expandable headband took care of that. I didn't need to bend the metal portion of the headband, as suggested, to make it any wider.

Adjusting Volume made incoming speech loud enough (and having a Tone control is a nice touch). But then my own voice was too loud in my ear. So I moved the Voice Boom tip two inches further away from my mouth (and may have spoken a little more softly without realizing it). The other person could still heard me loudly enough. And incoming and outgoing loudness were balanced for my ear! Perfecto!

I plan to use the T10 for any calls expected to last over 10 minutes. Especially, for tech phone help calls. Shades of that awful 4 hour call to India last year! My game plan is:

1) Make the call on the nearby cordless speakerphone.
2) Hands free, talk into the speaker to make menu choices.
3) Listen to the speaker while resuming work, and wait, wait, wait, for up to 30 minutes!
4) When a live person finally answers, ask them to wait a moment.
5) Press the speakerphone Hold button, slip the headset onto my head, and press the T10 On button. "Can you hear me now? Good!"

Like others, I purchased this for home office use. I read the mixed reviews and had faith in the positive reviews, to my later dismay. This phone and headset is terrible. The set beeps loudly and randomly while dialing a number, almost as if it is ringing but for example when only 3 digits into dialing a number. If you plow on and finish dialing, once you are connected the signal quality is horrible. If you leave mute off, there is a very loud hum on the line (not present on any other phone in my house or other phones plugged into that jack), and if you mute the phone a quiet but bearable hum. The loud hum is heard by the people you called. So basically the phone is bearable if you leave it on mute the whole time, but a complete waste of money if you actually need to talk. Aside from the hum and weird ringing, it is fine - headset is comfortable etc. DO NOT MAKE MY MISTAKE and buy this, I have tried 2 of these phones and both had the same problems, those few who are satisfied got lucky.

1.0 out of 5 stars Picks Up Radio Signals, March 22, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Plantronics T10 Corded Headset Phone (Office Product)
I purchased this phone for use in a home office and discovered immediately that it picked up a local radio station at a very audible level. I visited the Plantronics website and discovered that were well aware of this problem because it was listed in the FAQ on how to address the situation which they claimed was cause by living too close to radio station towers (we don't live near any radio towers). It went on to suggest ordering a filter to be installed between the phone and the headset control unit, but since this model has the head set control and phone fully integrated, I was doubtful of the solution. The alternative was to try several different locations and I finally discovered that if the phone was placed in my closet, the intereference dissappeared. I finally threw it away because of this ridiculous issue. Apart from this, it's a great phone, but this fatal flaw made it useless to me though I'm sure some users may never encounter this problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars great quality!, June 12, 2001

This is the second model of this phone I have purchased - I'm a repeat buyer because the first one worked out so well. Great, clear sound quality, and a comfortable headset. I prefer a corded phone to cordless for the security factor, and because in a power outage a cordless phone is not operable. If you want a corded phone with a headset, this is the one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Discovered solution to buzzing issue, January 10, 2009
This review is from: Plantronics T10 Corded Headset Phone (Office Product)
I purchased this product refurbished for my business. At first I was reluctant because of some reviews, but I had difficulties finding another product that was all-inclusive such as this one.

I was wary and prepared to hear buzzing. I did not initially, but after I took my fourth client call there was so much buzzing in the line, I could not hear my client. I discovered the problem was interference with my cell phone which was on and near the unit. I simply removed that from the immediate area of the phone along with anything else that may cause a line disturbance and it was clear as a bell from there on.

So far I'm very happy with this product. I would have given it 5 stars, but it seems a little flimsy and fragile to me. Also, you need to hit the on/off button rather firmly to ensure it hangs up.

I needed a phone for a home office. This phone was recommended and I bought it through an Amazon affiliated merchant. It is my 1st handsfree phone and I love the convenience of it! No more neck aches. Sound quality is as good or better than my cordless phone and no interference so far from any of the other equipment in the office. Small size base, comfortable headset. I would change 2 things - the MUTE button is right above the ON/OFF button and could cause an embarrassing hangup. The other is a longer headset cord. It appears to be about three feet long. Otherwise very nice!

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible sound quality, April 16, 2007

I work at home, and need great sound quality. This certainly isn't the set for it!

When I first plugged the system in, the static was terrible, unless I was on mute (that's not very useful, is it?) But since I was training, I thought I would hang on to it and see if it got better. Instead, it got worse. Even muting does not kill the static. Instead, I can hardly hear anything.

I am returning this unit for a refund and returning to my VXI unit. I am not crazy about the VXI, due to the fact that they seem to be having a manufacturing problem (I have gone through two that just died, another person in my group has gone though three) and it really kills when you are trying to work and can't - but there is no way I could live with the horrible static on the Plantronics unit.

This is a total disappointment. The unit is comfortable, the larger format on the keypad is nice, with big buttons, but the noise kills it. Back to Amazon with this one!

2.0 out of 5 stars comfortable but overly sensitive to interference, February 19, 2007
This review is from: Plantronics T10 Corded Headset Phone (Office Product)
Like others, I received a unit that had a very noticeable hum. It was loud enough that others on a conference call were asking whose phone was acting up. It nearly disappears when on mute.

However, I found that the hum isn't necessarily in the phone or headset. After receiving a warranty replacement unit with the same problem, I hooked both up to a telephone line simulator. Surprisingly, both units were silent. Digging further I realized my phone line has a slight hum from the phone company. Other phones reject this hum to the point it is almost unnoticeable. The T10 picks up the hum and seems to amplify it back.

The headset is very comfortable, and other than the hum, the sound quality is great. If you have a quiet line, this could be a very good head set. If you don't, it's horrible. I still use it for long conference calls where I stay on mute.

The mute button is annoying. It makes an audible click on the line when going on or off mute. And it is too close to the on/off button. Even though it's a large button, it would be better if it had more separation.

Overall, one star for comfort, one star for the excellent warranty support from Plantronics. It would have gotten 5 if it hadn't been for the hum problems.

I have a home business & this product works great & doesn't take up much room on my desk. It works perfectly to block out the background noise when my dog barks & occasionally when my grandkids stop by. So I highly recommend this product!

1.0 out of 5 stars Buzz in microphone, January 6, 2006
This review is from: Plantronics T10 Corded Headset Phone (Office Product)
Amazon quickly shipped this item to me and I was ready to rock 'n' roll -- until I plugged it in. There was a distinct buzzing noise that both myself and the caller on the other end could hear. The buzzing noise stopped when I hit mute, so the Plantronics rep said it was a microphone problem. Amazon was very gracious about their return policy and I was quickly sent a new phone free of charge. Well, the second phone does the same thing and I'm returning it to get a refund. Maybe just my phone line? Possibly. But I've tried two phones now and have the same problem with both.
