Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4 Plants without seeds are termed simple because they evolved before the plants with seeds. However, their life cycles and methods of reproduction are anything but simple, as they involve cell fission, sporing, conjugation, and alternation of generations. Introducing these complex families of plants to young readers is not a simple task, and sometimes the text is unclear. For example, the fungus wheat rust must spend part of its life on one plant and part on wheat. The text implies that all rusts must alternate generations between plants. The role of seedless plants in evolution is very briefly touched upon. Difficult words are defined in the glossary, but the pronunciation guide is sometimes more confusing than the word itself. The color photographs are of very high quality. Fran Millhouser, Arlington County Libraries, Va.
