Granted, I went into this book with really low expectations - I love Piers Anthony's earlier works, and remember liking Cthon and Phthor a lot. However, I did not realize how old this book was - the cover art is typical 80s science cheese. It has been 20 years or so since I read the first two books, so the details of them were lost, but that was fine - this book can be enjoyed without them. My vague familiarity probably helped, but was not necessary. If you are looking for something different, give this one a try.
