4.0 out of 5 stars nice sound for such a cheap amp, August 10, 2008
This review is from: Plasma Sphere Series 2-CHANNEL Amplifier (Electronics)
i bought a pair of these on closeout for just $40 each for their plasma sphere displays. photos don't do them justice! they're much bluer than in photos making them look more high tech. it would be nice if the displays had sensitivity controls because they don't work with low level music. as the volume goes up though they start to flicker like lightning strikes and the louder you play, the more constant the plasma effect is. i expect these amps to hold extra "crowd appeal" to my street party bicycle wagon.

the sound was a pleasant surprise. i just tested both amps yesterday. they don't have the ultimate low level resolution of my class D panasonic reciever, but they definately offer crisp and grain free treble right out of the box. i'd call the sound slightly warm and forgiving, but not as closed in as old NAD home recievers. they especially seem to like dynamics. if i were to describe their sound, it might be "a hottie dancing on the beach in a bikini". they have an eager and playful sound compared to more clinical class D but are much better sounding than expected as i'd given up on class A/B amplification after buying my panasonic home reciever. they surprised me with their treble extension and ease especially at the price paid for them.

the amp's onboard features are ample... level control, bass boost, and high and lowpass controls depending on whether you chose HP/LP or full range operation and the RCA out jacks put out full range for daisy chaining to another amp. a pair of these is all that's needed for mains and subs. all of the controls have a nice silky feel to them. the bass boost adds nice warmth to small mains. the remote doesn't seem to offer as much range as the onboard bass boost but to be fair i haven't tested it with my subwoofer but it's just icing on the cake.

the only negative thing i can say about them is that their colors don't match. one amp is the cool pewter color shown in online pics while the other is a darker smoky color. fortunately i won't be displaying them side by side as one would in a trunk instaollation, but it is a mildly annoying quality control issue. for what i intend to use them for though the price was definately right (even at their $80 original price), their sound is fine and those plasmasphere displays are EXTREMELY beautiful electric blue eye candy.
