I have sold hoses similar to this at home shows before, and here are some of the distinctions which aren't obvious at first glance.

It is exceptionally strong material, and it does hold it's recoil ability.

The measured length is at maximum stretch. Because of the recoil ability it takes a little muscle to get there.

When it's full of water, the weight effects the recoil ability.

The transparent quality of the hose actually lets light inside and can allow the growth of algae.

It is a very clean material and is suitable for drinking water.

It has a higher PSI rating than most hoses which means it's good under pressure.

A few of them together make a decent solar water-heater.

The material is polyurethane. There are good polyurethane adhesives which will seal punctures you might get in the hose.

One of the other reviews stated that the water pressure wasn't sufficient. There are larger diameter versions of this type of hose available.

Hope that helps,

Frank Boyd

This is a very nice product for its intended use (albeit one that is rather similar to many others marketed elsewhere). However, please bear in mind a couple of subtleties that may not be obvious from the item description:

(1) The length of the hose is measured at its theoretically full extension. However, the hose never actually reaches this full extension because of elastic resistance (i.e. the very same "spring" effect which is the reason you presumably bought the hose) and torsion along the length of the hose as it is stretched. My experience is that you lose approximately 25% of the hose's length to these two effects. The only way to beat this is by making sure that the hose's rated length is that much LONGER than you need.

(2) Make sure that you have the appropriate adapter permitting you to attach the hose to your faucet. Designer faucets, faucets with hose attachments, imported faucets, and outdoor faucets all may have trouble working with this hose out of the box.

Don't use this hose as your only yard hose that you plan on hauling half around the house, hooking sprinklers up to, or other "regular" hose use. It simply doesn't work too well for that type of stuff.

However, I am using this hose in the front of my house to water a particular tree and some shrubs that aren't worth hauling the big heavy green house around the house to water them.

This hose is real light, stylish, and takes up very little space. It is not the eye sore like the big green hoses. I have even gotten compliments on it from the neighbors. I have noticed that people who use Macintosh computers tend to like the hose the most. What is it with the translucent colors and Mac users anyway? :)

It did everything I wanted and more!

I bought the springhose for covienient hose cleanup and for watering my plants. I was a little disappointed in it. When I began to use the hose with my garden nozzle, the water flow was very weak, even with the hose turned to max flow, and the water flow out the nozzle was slow and felt as if it had gaps of air in it. It also often gets caught on corners. It does spring into a small pile, with some of your own effort, and does save time from hose reeling. If you don't mind giving up full pressure in the hose for the spring feature, then it will make you happy.

I am an Extension Agent who specializes in Horticulture and I can tell you that this is a poor idea for a product. First, there is insufficient flow though the narrow hose. It takes a long time to properly water with this product. The second major flaw is that once you're more than a few feet from spigot, the hose tends to make a straight line between you and it thereby knocking over pots and breaking fragile stems. The retraction "feature" also makes it hard to set a sprinkler out in the yard without staking it down. You would be better served by buying a quality supple hose and spending the 45 seconds (I timed it) to properly wind a hose. This might be okay for someone in a Condo or only has a few plants on a deck.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Great Product!, May 12, 2002

I was brousing through Amazon.com a few weeks ago and noticed the SpringHose. I had seen them in stores, and really liked the idea and convenience of this product. Upon further review and price comparison on Quality, amazon.com has the most competitive price available for this product. Considering it is a North American made product, I love that I can rely on its lifetime warranty. I have enjoyed the many conveniences this product has brought, not only to my garden but for washing my car as well.
Many thanks, I Give full marks for the SpringHose!!!!!!!
W.M.

I THOUGHT A $50 HOSE FOR $20 WOULD BE A WISE PURCHASE. I THOUGHT THE TRANSPARENT BLUE LOOKED COOL AND THAT THE COILED FORM WOULD SAVE EFFORT WHEN WATERING. I AM DISAPPOINTED IN THE HOSE FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: 1. THE HOSE SOMETIMES KINKED CUTTING OFF ALL FLOW WHEN TRYING TO STRETCH THE COILS OUT. 2. THE FITTINGS LEAKED EVEN AFTER USING PLIERS TO TIGHTEN THEM. 3.WHEN WATERING YOU ARE ACTUALLY HOLDING UP MORE LENGTH OF HOSE (AND THE WATER IN IT) THAN A NORMAL HOSE AND THE EXTRA WEIGHT IS MORE FATIGUEING. 4. THE COILS ACTUALLY GET CAUGHT ON THINGS MUCH MORE THAN THE NORMAL HOSE. 5. THE $15 CRAFTSMAN HOSES PURCHASED AT SEARS HALF-PRICE SALES FOR $7.50 ARE ACTUALLY EASIER TO USE THAN THIS $20 HOSE. 6. THE FLOW RATE THROUGH THE SMALLER DIAMETER IS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED.
THUS, I COULD SEE CERTAIN VERY LIMITED APPLICATIONS WHERE THIS HOSE MIGHT BE A PLUS; BUT FOR THE GREAT MAJORITY OF NEEDS AROUND THE YARD IT IS ACTUALLY LESS USEFUL THAN A NORMAL HOSE...WHETHER $50 OR $20. HOPE THIS WAS HELPFUL TO YOU.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks, Plastair!! This Hose is LIGHTweight and Efficient!, April 27, 2004

I bought this hose when it first hit the market and am extremely pleased with it. Performance is great and the water pressure is fine, but the best features of this hose are that it's very lightweight and it stores so easily. I live on a 1/4 acre lot FULL of flowers, veggies and trees, and dragging those heavy, cumbersome hoses around can be exhausting. This hose is SO much lighter - fills the bill for women, seniors and anyone who wants to conserve their energy for more important things (like pulling weeds!)

Storage? No problem. Hammer a stake or a PVC pipe in the ground a short distance from your water outlet and slide the coiled hose over the stake - easy and convenient!

Problems or questions? The folks at Plastair are absolutely great - they stand by their warranty 100% and are wonderful to deal with. I highly recommend this product!

Granted, this is a $20 hose, but I thought it would be ok for what I wanted. I only have a small group of shrubs and plants which I wanted to water with this hose and I thought it would be great to pull it out, do my watering, and presto, let it spring back. I was very wrong. First of all, I had a horrible time with the faucet fitting. I tried multiple times to get it to work without leaking but it only ended in me getting drenched when I went to turn the water on or off. The water pressure was not great, but with the smaller hose, I had already assumed that would be the case. If you want to use this for something other than minor watering, don't bother. The spring recoil did not work. I basically had to pick the hose up and place it where I wanted it and "help" the recoil process along.

I really liked the idea of a quick, cool hose. That's exactly what it was though..just an idea. I would NOT recommend this to anyone.
