Our dishwasher racks were a disaster. Rust spots all over them, and the wires were almost rusted through in several places. I have previously bought Uber-Goop and caps to repair them, but it set up so fast I could not even use the entire bottle before it was too thick to apply. I have used plasti-dip products on other things before, so ordered three bottles of this. I cleaned the racks first, sanding enough to remove loose rust and rubber. I opened the first bottle and got everything coated with one thin coat. Working time was sufficient to use the entire bottle without thickening problems. When it dried, I did a close examination and found a couple spots I had missed, so opened the second bottle and coated them, as well as an additional coat on the thin spots. After it cured, I put the racks back in and after the next load of dishes, I examined them closely and found a few spots of rust indicating uncoated areas. I cleaned and coated those spots, and added more to the thin areas. After two more loads of dishes, I found only two spots of rust to clean and coat. It has not been a couple of months and MANY loads of dishes later, and no new rust spots have appeared. I still have a bottle and a half on the shelf for future problems when they occur. We had planned on buying a new dishwasher, but now we can put that off indefinately!! Total cost, shipping and all, was around $20!!
Our dishwasher is a Maytag, and the genius that used STEEL under a rubber coating for a dishwasher should be fired. Our next one will be STAINLESS ONLY.

Product works great, sealed off all the rough spots on our 10+ year old dishwasher rack. Good solution since we plan to just get a new dishwasher in the next year or two, and didn't want to spend 150+ buying new racks.
We had quite a few bad spots, so I took a dremel to grind them down and then used the product. Just took a little while.

rerack dishwasher repair,
This review is from: Plasti Dip Dishwasher ReRack White - 630070 (Kitchen)
My dishwasher racks had rust spots all over the place. Bought the rerack online thru Ace Hardware store. You can have it shipped to the store to save the postage and handling. The stuff works great. Put a little extra on the deep rust spots to make sure it holds well. So far it has worked like a charm. No rust appears to show thru the paint and it has held well thru the wash cycles. Two thumbs up for this product. It cost about $9.00 to have it shipped to the store. Alot cheaper than buying new dishwasher racks.

It's been on only a week, but holding fine so far. Scrape and sand the rust and degrease with alcohol before application. Use at least 3 coats.

The product worked as intended. Great coverage. After application, we have seen off and on white residue on glassware (probably on other dishes as well). It seems to be getting better, but it is an issue none the less. I did apply twice in some area, so I am not sure if that was an issue.

I was skeptical but it works as advertised. I used a dishwasher cleaner (Dishwasher Magic) before I applied this product to make sure the inside of the D/W was really clean and dry. The bottle has an applicator brush in the cap so it's easy to use. I put on several coats until the bottle was empty, let it set for two days. This product has a bit of an odor from the vapor as it dries. It has been about 3 months now and the D/W rack is still in good shape with the ReRack coating covering all the rusty areas.
Edit 06/21/11: The areas I coated with this plastic coating are still in pretty good shape, I am amazed - and pleased.

I followed the instructions on the product. I put 2 coats on in the minor areas and 3 coats in the bad areas. I waited a 1/2 an hour in between coats and 16 hours before running my dishwasher. A week later I checked to see how it was holding up. I found 5 areas where the product was coming off. I decided to just buy a new dishwasher for $300 because it was the same amount as replacing my racks. I also did some research online about coatings on dishwasher racks. Nylon coated racks last longer then vinyl which is what I had and my dishwasher was only 4 years old! I made sure that my new dishwasher had nylon coated racks. I also have a water softener so all of the salt in the water might be why the rerack didn't hold up.

I bought ReRack after getting rust stains on the edges of my dishes. This stuff works great in covering up the worn areas on my dishwasher rack. I even used it afterwards on my iPhone cable and Shure earphones because the cables on these two items had begun to separate from the plugs. I was able to use ReRack to cover up the exposed bare wires and to reinforce the points where the cables connected to the plugs. I'm very happy with this product.

I followed the directions on the package and it worked beautifully. Like putting on nail polish. I put on 3 coats and it sealed the rusty spots and there has been no further problem.

Magical, inexpensive answer to an expensive problem,

I just saved the cost of a new dishwasher - hooray! I installed our Kitchenaid dishwasher in 1971, over 40 years ago. It still works fine, but the vinyl covered racks had numerous places where they were rusting very badly. Obviously, racks are no longer available for such an old machine, but even if they were, they'd be too costly to justify instead of just biting the bullet and replacing the dishwasher. In some spots, the wire was rusted more than halfway through. Some of the spikes were an inch or more shorter than original because they'd rusted away. In short, the racks were in HORRIBLE shape. I found a bottle of ReRACK at a hardware store and since it was only 7 bucks, I figured there was not much to lose. The only color in the store was white, I later found out Performix also makes gray, but it didn't matter since my dishwasher racks are pale blue. White looks way better than rust! There were so many rusty spots, I decided to sandblast the racks. If you don't have access to sandblasting, you could start with 50 grit sandpaper, and move to 120 to finish, or you could use a grinding wheel in a rotary tool. After getting rid of the rust, clean the surfaces carefully twice with lacquer thinner to completely degrease. This is a better solvent than the rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol they recommend. Most rubbing alcohol is only 70%, meaning 30% is water, which is a lousy grease cutter. If you use rubbing alcohol, try to find 90% which is a better solvent for grease. Use clean paper towels and Q-tips for this job. Let dry thoroughly. Apply several thin coats of ReRACK, letting it dry between coats, approximately a half-hour or more. For the worst spots on my racks, I put 5 coats on, so it requires some time and patience. Tilt the rack using some blocks of scrap wood to allow even application. You'll find you need to reposition the rack several times to gain good access to all spots needing repair. Our bottom rack needed about 120 spots repaired, the top rack only about 30. One bottle did the job but there was very little left over. The solvent (mostly acetone) evaporates very quickly. If your product thickens up, you can thin it with acetone or with Plastic Wood Solvent, which contains acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and toluene. Add just a little solvent (less than a cc), replace the cap, and shake thoroughly. Do this until you have the consistency you want. If you over dilute, you can just let it sit for a while with the cap off because the solvents are very volatile. Make sure you replace the cap tightly while you are examining the rack for more areas to repair, and also while you are repositioning the rack to get access to all repair areas. Some people will object to the odor. I didn't think it was as terrible as some others. If it bothers you, do this job outdoors, or in the garage with the door open. I did it indoors but had a fan on low to blow fresh air past me. After curing in a warm dry place for 24 hours, the racks can be returned to service. Our dishwasher is working great and no more rust. The repairs were done several months ago and are holding up perfectly. After a month, I did find a few tiny spots where rust was starting to bleed through. I simply cleaned those areas with solvent, let dry, and reapplied a couple more coats. Worked great. Couldn't be happier with the results. This stuff is amazing. Just remember to read and follow the directions carefully. Lots of people don't and you don't want to waste your time to get poor results. Do it right and you'll be delighted and save a lot of money if your dishwasher is working fine otherwise. |
