I bought this for teaching math in our home school cooperative. They've been extremely helpful both in helping with assessment of students' knowledge of various math concepts at the beginning of the year and in teaching various math concepts. They're solid plastics construction with clear single divisions on the tens, hundreds, and thousands rods/flats/block. This isn't really a complaint but a suggestion, either the box they came in could have dividers in it or you might want a container for keeping the individual sets (cubes, rods, flats) separate; it's a bit difficult putting everything back in the box, but it's working fine so far.

This review is from: Plastic Base Ten Number Concepts Set (Misc. Supplies)
I bought this base ten number set to help teach my kids a variety of math concepts. Our 3 kids range in age from 7 to 2, and they're in different places mathametically, of course. The great thing about manipulatives such as base ten blocks, or Montessori beads, or what have you, is that they make abstract concepts "concrete." It's obvious to me, as a Montessori kid and the parent of young children, that the act of touching the cubes really reinforces the learning process, and it also helps build confidence.
In this instance, when I opened up the base ten set, all three kids immediately swarmed me asking to play with them. Mission accomplished! So with my older daughter, we worked on adding larger numbers, with my son, we worked on single digit addition, and with the youngest, we worked on identifying a number. With regard to this set, there are a few things I would caution about. First, the single cubes are quite small. If you've got small children, keep a close eye on them. Second, while the base ten "sticks" are in a ziplock bag, the singles are in a tear open bag. So storage is a bit of an issue, and I could see where the blocks could get scattered everywhere if a child got into them unsupervised. Also, I'd appreciate somewhat deeper indents in the rods (10 unit), flat (100 unit) and cube (1000 unit), just so the number of units comprising each is somewhat clearer. Lastly, I'd note that the user guide that accompanies these units is somewhat limited, focusing mostly on teaching regrouping in addition. That being said, there are plenty of guides and pointers available on the Internet related to teaching multiplication, division, fractions and decimals, among other things. In the end, I'd say any of the foregoing complaints are minor in nature. I'd highly recommend these blocks to anyone interested in teaching their child math, and I'm sure I'll be using these a lot going forward.

This is a priceless learning tool and a great helper with math homework. It has helped my 2nd graders immensely with visualizing and understanding place value and helping with addition/subtraction. Super!
