5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, even after you add the cost of shipping, it is still worth it!
I have had one of these single-cup coffee drip dispensers for a long time. It uses a standard #2 paper filter, but I use #4 filters instead, since they are cheaper (but the #4 filter will stick up a bit past the top edge of this cone). It is still going strong after almost ten years, and I wash it every month or so on the top rack of my dishwasher.

Plastic Filter Cone #2 Medium Coffee Maker Black or Red

Lost my Melitta #2 filter cone and ordered what I thought was the same thing manufactured by another company. What I received was twice the size (more like a #4 cone), with 4 large drip holes versus 1 small hole on mine. Water drips thru much faster making a watered down cup of coffee - yuck!

I decided to get another one, since it is hard to find good functional products like this anymore. It has FOUR holes in the bottom that allow for quick, even draining of the water after you pour it over the grounds. I use about 20 to 30 grams of ground coffee to make a 12 to 18 ounce cup of coffee. I have used both store-bought ground coffee (in the past) and now fresh ground coffee (I grind the beans finely, so the 4 holes on the bottom help keep the water flowing through properly).

This cone will fit on top of large and small cups alike: the outer diameter of the base is 4.75 inches, which means it will fit quite comfortably on a cup that has a top diameter of 4.5 inches, and the inside diameter (where the coffee seeps through) is only 2 inches in diameter, which means it will fit on *any* cup with a top diameter between 2.25 inches and 4.5 inches. The base, excepting the 4 holes, is solid, so VERY LITTLE HEAT ESCAPES from your cup while the cone is on top of it and the water is still seeping through.

Anyway, other cones designed for one cup all have various drawbacks: some have bottoms with unnecessary, non-functional grooves that allow heat to escape, or there is only one big hole for the coffee to go through and the water spends too much time in the grounds making the coffee bitter, or you have to pour just a little bit of water over the grounds at a time, or the hole is really big or there are too many smaller holes and the water goes through too quickly providing a weaker brew (or requiring the use of more grounds), or some other poorly thought-out design flaw. And cones made of ceramic are heavy and could topple lighter-weight or taller cups.

I saw that this item goes out-of-stock from time to time, and wanted a backup in case I ever lose the one I have been using (without a hitch, I might add). I recommend you buy one before this particular design becomes extinct.

EDIT: I forgot to add that the very bottom of this cone extends a mere 3/8 inches into the cup you place it on, reducing the likelihood of the brewed coffee coming into contact with the plastic (unless you pour too much water into the cone and don't monitor it as it seeps through) and also making it unlikely that you will spill the grounds when you whisk the cone away after brewing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Making coffee is so easy., December 13, 2011

To save some money, I chose to use paper cone other than a coffee machine. This one is cheap and serves its purpose. The reason I gave it four stars is because it doesn't stand stably on my coffee/tea mug, which has a large opening. So be careful if you like large mugs as I do.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware - too many drip holes!, July 10, 2011

I decided to buy a filter drip cone after using one in France for a couple of months. This one appeared identical to the one I had in my apt. there. Unfortunately, instead of having one drip hole in the center of the unit, it has four! Sadly, the photo of the cone doesn't show that. Once you pour the water over the coffee in the paper filter, it drains immediately instead of slowly which results in a very weak cup of coffee. The other reason I went with this one was because the description said made in Holland, so in addition to looking like mine, I figured it would be crafted to a European standard. Wrong!

I'm very disappointed since I purposefully didn't bring back a duplicate of the one I had in France because being plastic I was afraid it would get broken in my luggage. I should have taken a chance. At the very least, maybe I should have ordered the Melitta brand that is also sold on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great way to enjoy coffee, July 1, 2011

This review is from: Plastic Filter Cone #2 Medium Coffee Maker Black or Red
Recently, I visited Blue Bottle coffee shop in Brooklyn, the lastest coffee extravaganza from San Francisco, and realized that they have some really good tasting coffee. I was intrigued that they didn't use the regular filter machines like other less-snobby coffee places. Instead, they used the pour-over technique that in their own words intensifies the flavor of the coffee and lets you enjoy your cup of joe. Amazingly, they did not lie, and I immediately wanted to switch from regular filter to pour-over. Of course, they were ready to help, and wanted to sell me their porcelain filter cone for a great price of just under $30. Since money is not found on streets these days, plan B was to go to Amazon and see if it would be possible to buy something that is priced for normal people who are not posh Brooklynites.

The answer is in front of you, this little piece of plastic magic combined with good quality coffee and constantly boiling water on your stove will return your faith in
good coffee. The cone is good for two cups of coffee, so it will probably serve well most of the households.

5.0 out of 5 stars Used it for 20 years - it's wonderful!, May 24, 2011
This review is from: Plastic Filter Cone #2 Medium Coffee Maker Black or Red
First, a disclaimer. Some of the other reviews indicate that they're now shipping an inferior product, not the one in the picture. The one I have and love is the one in the picture.

I've had it for 20 years and it is still going strong. I've tried other types of individual serving coffee makers but none can compare to this item. I also use it to filter the whey out of yogurt to make thick, greek-style yogurt and, of course, whey for fermenting vegetables and such. It works perfectly and is indestructible (Mine is Filtropa brand, I don't know if this one is also, but it looks exactly the same.)

Previously purchased a plastic cone filter from seller and was very please with the product so I ordered another one. Instead, received a flawed design where the base protrudes into the coffee by two inches, which is gross. Also, the holes are way too big and the coffee drains too quickly, making a far less tasting cup of coffee. BUYER BEWARE!

4.0 out of 5 stars works well, August 23, 2010

Have used this for many years. I actually have two. The oldest one has only one hole, which gives me a slightly stronger flavor than the newer one which has more holes. I use this with my drip coffee maker. I put the mug on the warming plate of the coffee maker, top it with the filter cone, add the paper filter and the coffee grounds and then I add another paper filter on top of it all to avoid coffee splash back. I pour enough water in the coffee maker to make one cup and turn it on. In a couple of minutes you have a mug of coffee. If you don't add a filter on top of the grounds, the splash back will be brown from the coffee in the cone that hasn't seeped into the mug yet. By adding the filter on top of the grounds, any splashes will be clear water which makes keeping the coffee maker cleaner. I've used this method for many years. If the cone were glass instead of plastic, I would give it 5 stars.

We've had this cone for years, and it makes great coffee. Compared to a Melitta single-hole drip cone, which made bitter overly acidic coffee, with muddied flavor notes, the coffee from this comes out smoother and with a more rounded, cleaner taste. The reason is the four holes - sure, the water doesn't stay in contact with the coffee for long, but if you use two rounded standard espresso scoops of grounds, the coffee comes out great. And if you want to be stingy with the coffee, go buy a Mr. Coffee and some Folger's or something and leave us coffee geeks alone.

While the item has a #2 stamped or engraved this is a #4 Cone. The #2 filters are too small however if you are looking for a #4 you've got the right product. Evidently, there was some issue of communication to the manufacturer as to 'what this item' measured. I've owned and purchased several Melita Filter Cones over the years. This is NOT a #2 despite the lable. Steer away and find something made by Melita if you want the quality you deserve.
