5.0 out of 5 stars great - responsible - source of info
I found out about this book from the "askdrm" Web site - and it gave me the confidence to re-commit myself to an exercise regime AND to call a plastic surgeon for an initial consultation!

3.0 out of 5 stars Plastic Surgery 101 For The Patient From The Doctors Point
I believe an informed patient or consumer is the most satisfied one. Dr. Marfuggi was very right to share his views from a position as a surgeon who treats canditates for surgery by informing them of all basic procedures, what they involve, and in his own way tries to give you a good idea of what the experiance can be like, when educated as well as prepared. This book however falls short in the human area of cosmetic and plastic surgey when it comes down to the emotion, the individuality and the every person is different aspect. This to me is so important for I am pursuing surgery and I found books written by people who have actually gone through the searching, the consults, and the procedures. I know now from these other books this is such a personal and individual experiance. Do all people recover in th amount of weeks the Dr. says? In this day of HMO's and finacing your surgery, does he address the fact that this is not only costing you a small fortune but you may need to be an inpatient or even qualify for inpatient care. What about the patient who is willing and can afford to stay in the hospital for they know they need that support. Does he tell you that Drs. often have a list of nurses who work only on these cases. Yes it costs, but even if you can't afford it, don't you want to know?Perhaps it is something you can arrange at home than. Does he tell you that office staff that treats you rudely can be a problem if you are apprehensive post -op with calling the Dr. because you feel as though you are bothering his staff? From a text point of view read this for explantion and a primer. For real help, I suggest you look up authors who have been on the other side of the experiance. The book falls short when factoring in that these personal factors are very major for whoever is considering any procedure. Educate yes, by all means, but if in the patients shoes, read their accounts also. It is you who will be going to pursue the surgical experiance. The Dr.is in the house but not on the table. Put this book as a reference guide in basics. Read however authors who have been there...had that.

5.0 out of 5 stars best guide for the uninitiated, March 5, 1999
This review is from: Plastic Surgery : What You Need To Know - Before, During, and After (Paperback)
I gave this book to my mom who had always wanted to know more about this type of surgery. She loved it! She had resisted going to "the doctor" and asking him questions because she was not confident of her language skills, nor did she know what to ask. She liked the lay explantions and pictures in the book. Now that she understands what she wants, she is making plans "to look younger".

5.0 out of 5 stars Not impossibly technical, yet thoughough and informative., March 18, 1998

This review is from: Plastic Surgery : What You Need To Know - Before, During, and After (Paperback)
I read this book "Plastic Surgery: Everything You Need to KNow-Before, During, and After" (yes all the way through) and found it facsinating. It's written for people like me whose memories check out upon entering any doctor's office. It's not impossibly technical, but thourough. I was considering having my eyes done and magazine article just somehow didn't give me enough information. Dr. Marfuggi's book told me everything I wanted to know about blepharoplasties (eye lifts) as well as things I didn't know I SHOULD know about the procedure. P.S. I'm getting my eyes done. The book may not make Oprah's list, but it tells you absolutely everything about every procedure. What to do before, how to take care of yourself after, when not to panic...it is complete. I ended up reading the whole book and am now the official consultant for all my friends. Actually, I just lend them the book. (The last time I lent the book it came back without the cover and what looked like pizza stains on the liposuction section.) While I'm writing this I think maybe it should be on Oprah's list. If there's anyone out ther, send her a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Town & Country magazine recommends Dr. Marfuggi's book, August 28, 2000

This review is from: Plastic Surgery : What You Need To Know - Before, During, and After (Paperback)
Out of all the plastic surgery books on the market, Dr. Marfuggi's book is recommended in Town & Country's March 2000 issue. The article is entitled "Pre-Op Reading List". Town & Country recommends "Plastic Surgery: What you need to know before, during and after" as a great place to begin researching any procedure. Described as a workbook that doesn't intimidate with technical talk, it breaks down procedures down to the basics (what's involved, length of surgery, anesthesia used, in/out patient, incisions/scarring) before tackling such risks and realities as pain and downtime.

From lasers to liposuction, rhinoplasty to resurfacing, the boundries of cosmetic surgery stretch with every scientific innovation. Keeping current is essential and this book is up-to-date. Dr. Marfuggi's book is a great primer for anyone considering plastic surgery.
