2.0 out of 5 stars Generic Hardcore With No Surprises
When the jocks and cheerleaders at my high school finally got into "Punk," it was this band. Slickly packaged, undemanding, and "outrageous", they filled a certain hipness niche. This album is particularly obvious. Minor Threat, Squirrel Bait, etc., flung themselves at rock with a juvenile heedlessness, but the DK's seemed to cautiously gather...

(REAL NAME)
Before the Dead Kennedys broke ground in 1979, American punk was a bunch of whiney, no talented, Iggy Pop wannabes. Then, with the realese of their first album, FRESH FRUIT FOR ROTTING VEGETABLES, the DKs created a new world of awareness and surprise in the American Punk Community.

With their second Album, PLASTIC SURGERY DISASTERS, DK continued to change punk by adding a whole new type of music. It wasn't the traditional three chords and chaos punk brought back from England and shown in america by bands like The Germs and X (which are some of the best punk bands of all time). Instead it was creative, ear catching, and emotinaly stimulating. Their smart, sarcastic political views alone make this one worht while. And the addition of their E.P. IN GOD WE TRUST, INC. makes it all the better.

This Album is both hilarious and scary. It is one of the best punk albums by one of the best punk bands. They did for America what the Sex Pistols did for England: created a whole new land of chaotic dreams for the dis-interested youth.

Oh man, if you don't have this CD and you like punk, I envy you because you can listen to it for the first time. THIS CD ROCKS! You won't find better punk anywhere, just try listening to Buzzbomb without banging your head around, or any other track on here for that matter. BUY IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tone poetry. And you can dance to it, too., August 14, 2000
By
This record is truly wonderful. You have great lyrics, fast and furious (for then) riffing, and the most mind-blowing collection of atmospheres and well... "textures" I've ever heard on a punk record. You should go ahead and buy it.

Jello Biafra managed to give a different intonation to each and every line. A good example is the saccharine 'Oh, you poor, poor thing' tone he uses in Buzzbomb to describe 'The lonely salesman' which turns into angry disgust when, in the very next line, he points out that the same lonely salesman is actually wanking in the men's room. There's the growing realization and desperation that marks the end of "Riot", where the character is left homeless but pathetically grabs on to the fact that the riot at least "was a blast", etc, etc. This is NOT a guy who shouts out the lyrics as best he can. This guy's a REAL singer who wants to communicate an idea, act out a story.

East Bay Ray threw in wonderful 60s surf/TV series guitar riffs everywhere and seemed to float effortlessly over the chaos and anger of the music and the sound itself is large, open and well... airy. Very odd and refreshing for a punk record and one of my favourite LPs. It's as close as punk has gotten to actual tone poetry, where a song is not **about** something, but IS something.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!, October 9, 2001
By A Customer
I'm gonna tackle this from a different angle.

In my opinion 'In God we Trust' is the greatest piece of Punk Vinyl ever.

I got this the day it came out and 20 years later it is still awesome and nothing comes close. Add on 'Plastic Surgery.......' and you have one hell of a CD.

Remember though, get the Alternative Tentacles version, not the money-grabbing re-issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars What should have been the "Nevermind" for 80's Punk, April 27, 1999
By A Customer
This album was my first exposure to the band, and my what a first impression! I immediately picked up the rest of the albums, but none come close to this one. "Well-Paid Scientist," and "We've Got a Bigger Problem Now" are worth the price of this CD alone. Every track is priceless. Well, the first few tracks on the "In God We Trust, Inc." aren't quite as strong as the rest, but it is still a great album. Get this album ASAP however possible, you won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Humorous, fun, meaningful., April 2, 1999
By A Customer
This is my personal favorite. If your going to buy/steal a DK album, this is the one to get. Only Jello Biafra could incorporate humor into serious topics without losing focus. These are bitterly sarcastic, hilariously cynical, yet incredibly powerful songs. Highly recommended even if you have never heard the band.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best album for the first time listner., July 16, 1998
By A Customer
If you have never heard DK before, this is a great start up album. It gives you a wide variaty of songs that explains exactly who they are and what they stand for, not to mention tunes such as Forrest Fire, and Terminal Preppie are catchy songs. Long time DK listners will enjoy this album also.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Dead Kennedys album- one of the best, October 20, 2001
By
Plastic Surgery Disaster and In God we Trust Inc. are truly classic punk albums. The songs are meaningful, intelligent, and sometimes very frightening. But that just sums up DK in general. These guys are undesrcibably awesome, with pounding guitars courtesy of Ray and Klaus, remarkeble drumming, and of course Jello Biafra. He is the ultimate songwriter and his chilling voice fits well with the great punk tunes. 'Buzzbomb from Pasedena' has gotta be my favorite track on this cd, but its hard to choose a favorite with so many great songs. 'Government Flu' has great, head-banging music, 'Terminal Preppy' showcases Jello's songwriting talent, and 'Moral Majority' is just a good-hearted, pleasant little Christian song. They all rock though.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT POWERFUL RECORD, October 12, 2000

A frenzied outta control slap in the face , a snarlling smartass album that can still anger anyone that dares to listen. "Terminal Preppie" , "Well Paid Scientist" , and "Buzzbomb" are slamming , and "Riot" , and "Bleed for Me" are errie , and I especially loved the inclusion of the "In God We Trust" EP , with my favorites "NAZI PUNKS F**k OFF" , and "Moral Majority" , "Dog Bite" , and "We've Got A Bigger Problem Now" . But I do wish that they would remaster this CD , along with Frakenchrist , which is also very scrappy sounding when compared to Fresh Fruit , and Bedtime.
